KILLER KART, 19KW ETEK POWER, 50 AH BATTERIES, 50 MPH

Well here is again another start of one of my projects. Starting with a stock racing kart with a 100cc two stroke motor.

PIC00133.jpg

PIC00134.jpg

I removed the motor and related parts and sold them on ebay. I recovered the cost of the Kart from the sale. Here is what the kart looks like half way through the convertion.

Electrical control box and gauge. 400 amp Alltrax controller and contactor behind the seat.

PIC00150__2_.jpg

Custom motor mount for the etek.

Started mounting the 50ah B+B Batteries. Four in total (48volts). Will add more info as I go along. Jurgen

Ah, nice to see an electric kart on the forums! Only ridden one once, but it was AWESOME.

Can't say the seat strikes my fancy. Needs to be black (mebbe blue...) to match. Love the carbon fiber, though (I think that's what it is).

How fast you trying to go ;)?

Re: KILLER KART, 19KW ETEK POWER, 50 AH BATTERIES, 50 MPH

Looking good! Never driven an e-cart but have driven a 100cc race kart exactly like that one - awesome fun!

I wonder if you could make a bunch of them and then open up an all electric race club. Back in the UK about a decade ago it was a popular event to go to an indoor kart track as a group and race the "Honda lawnmower engined" race karts (good for about 40mph? maybe?). Might still be popular. Electric karts would be better for an indoor racing experience than gas ones...

Anyone want to go in with me and buy one of those derelict Detroit buildings and open an electric kart racing club? ;-)

Thank for all the responce. I am looking to get the kart going speeds of about 45mph to 50mph. I don't want the gearing too tall. I want to be able to power slide and do donuts in the kart. At 400amps I may only get about 30 min of real fun time, regulated down will be much more. I am starting all thie wiring today. Cheers

That is way cool!

How come you get all the cool toys?

I can't wait to see a video of that thing. With the right gearing and weight distribution, you should be able to drit it nicely.

Re: KILLER KART, 19KW ETEK POWER, 50 AH BATTERIES, 50 MPH

This is fantastic!

I built an electric go kart a few years ago out of a sprint kart using the same gear; Etek & 48V Alltrax. But it was only done as a proof of concept for a larger project and wasn't as nicely done as this. Very well done! I only used 13Ahr Hawkers though so it would only have a run time of less than 5 minutes. When paced against my friend's pickup we figured it could hit 50 mph (difficult to verify since we would run out of room in the parking lot that we tested it in). We only got the truck to 45 mph until it had to break, but the kart had a little more acceleration left.

Do you have videos of this running?

Here are a couple more pictures of the wiring. First test went good. Left some rubber on the road. Hope to get some video up after the finishing touches are done.

that kart looks a lot of fun. Are you going to race against gas Karts?? how does the performance compare?

Bravo! For such a job well done!
Might I add a simple "diagnostic" ?

After a good hard run, use the back of your
fingers ( thin skin) to touch all connectors,
heatsinks, wires, pretty much all power transmission
parts?

The temperatures will tell you a story....

Good job!

Oh yes,

Your red "disconnect" button is well done also...
( easy to activate, simple, well done)

Re: KILLER KART, 19KW ETEK POWER, 50 AH BATTERIES, 50 MPH

Well it is DONE!!!!!!!!
Some minor adjustments of the controller, etc and............Nothing but rubber left on the road. This thing pulls, slides, spins, and takes off like no other kart. Here are some other pictures. I will be taking it to the local track to see how it does against the gassers. I already have my eye on another EV project so this kart may be sold to make room. Will probably sell it at the cost of the build. I added all the numbers and it came to a total of $3700 to build this kart not including labour. Let me know if you are interested before I sell it on ebay. I will Crate and prep the kart for shipping.

This kart was built on a used BRM rolling chassis, and all other parts are new.

Re: KILLER KART, 19KW ETEK POWER, 50 AH BATTERIES, 50 MPH

This is a very similar arrangement to a kart I developed last year. Same motor and controller package, and I geared it for about 50 mph as well.

I sure could use better batteries though. Just Autocrossed it yesterday and would love to be able to get the batteries to last long enough at peak power.

This kart is now for sale. It has been to many EV shows and events, but it is time again to make room for upcoming projects. Email me for pictures and questions. I will be selling it at the cost of parts only. Here is a list of costs.................

Etek motor $450
Alltrax controller $350
50 ah bateries $135 ea X 4 $540
Rolling chassis $1200
Throttle and contactor $150
Gauges, wiring, etc $200
Machining and alum diamond plate $200
new carbon fiber plastic $150
new drive hubs $100
Fast charger $250
Fiber glass seat $225
Labour........priceless $0.00

The list goes on, but these are the major items. Will let the kart go for $3000. I will prepare, and crate the kart for shipping. Will also deliver to a shipping outlet.
