Nimh Battery pack short circuit

I short circuited a 9.4v nimh battery pack made up of 8 cells due to not paying attention when wiring, for about 3 seconds the pack was connected wrong way. the pack is made up of a 2.4 plus 2.4 and 4.8v pack in series, (all the cells are the same). I was only only alerted to my mistake by some smoke coming off the terminal of a 2.4v pack, so then I immediately disconnected. Does this automatically mean permanent damage to all of the cells? I have a 9.4 smart charger for the pack, and a voltmeter.

Not necessarily. They're probably fine. Try to charge them up; the smart charger should let you know if there's a problem. I don't think there will be, since the weren't shorted for very long.

If you can charge them individually that would be best to see if anything odd shows up. I doubt you will have an issue though.

appreciate the feedback - charging the pack with smart charger worked fine today and voltages of individual packs ok as well
