I just wanted to throw this out and see if anyones tried it. Anyhow i've been looking at CVT transmissions developed for pocket bikes and was wondering if anyone has tried something like this on an Ebike and to what result. The transmissions are cheap $50-$80 and are quite tiny. It'd be nice to have a little more low end for the trails and still be able to cruise on road at what I'm doing now.

Supposedly, CVTs can be something like 95% efficient, but no one has tested it out to be sure. We're also concerned that the torque of a motor would be too much for your average CVT. Other than that, I don't see why it wouldn't work, except you'd have to make sure you disabled the mechanism that makes it disengage at low RPMs.

Ok so I'm gonna do it. I just ordered the CVT from a pocket bike store and should have it in a week or so. According to some posts I've read I should be able to adjust weights within the pulley or the springs if need be to match it to motor rpm.

Interesting, I hadn't heard of CVT's for pocket bikes. Do you think they'd handle enough power for an electric moped/motorcycle?

Heres the link to the part. http://www.pocketbikeparts.com/product_p/x2tx300627.htm I assume that the power shouldnt be an issue as far as hp goes The 50cc bikes are producing 3-4 hp. Torque may be an issue as well as RPM because these little gas engines are doing 8000+rpm. I should be able to work most of it out with gearing but wont really know till I get it. Given I'll be getting a small loss of efficiency with the trans I'm wondering if in the end I may gain some because of the possibility of keeping the motor operating at it's most efficient RPM. We'll see in a week or so I'll keep you guys updated.
If you are willing to drop major bucks on a nice CVT, there is a manually-controlled CVT designed for bicycles called NuVinci. The transmission sits within the rear hub of the bike. One of the members of http://bikeforums.net reports that it holds up to high power/torque extremely well and has worked great with his e-bike. His setup has pedals and motor providing power through the CVT hub.
Well it took a while to get going, but I did get it all to work reliably. As far as performance I would not recommend it. All in all after installation I was getting a 16/1 gear ratio before the transmission kicked in. I was getting better power but not what I expected. My top end suffered a bit because the motor wasnt turning the same RPMs with the extra drag.
In the end I lost about 4mph to top speed gained a little power and a bunch of noise. I preferred the guietness of my previous belt drive system so I'm currently working on getting that back together.
why cant we just make a cvt? have you seen the technology explained on youtube. its the things as your gears getting smaller in the shape of a cone but with no chain. instead you would need a Velcro rope or something. but the even better way of doing it is to have 2 cones pointing at each other that can be pushed closer together and pulled farther apart so that a belt with the perfect width could ride the cones on a tighter circle or a fatter circle. a rope or belt could be used with grip tape or rubber.
was the cvt you tried that nuvinci kind or a different kind?
