Have a 24v10AH pingping

I ended up choosing pingping as a battery source, for now. I've got a 24v10ah pack in hand and a 36v10ah pack is on it's way. The 24v pack is going into my Charger bicycle, while the 36v pack is going into my Electra w/ WE BD 36v motor.

I have only taken a first look at the pack right now. The Charger bike has a large plastic battery box that mounts in the center triangle -- not to water bottle mounts, but to a mount specifically meant for this battery box. The frame is custom designed ..

I weighed the batter box with the SLA batteries -- they are 2x 12v 12ah batteries, and the box weighed 26 lbs with the batteries in them.

The pingping 24v10ah pack is almost exactly the size of one of the 12v12ah batteries -- that makes the pingping pack exactly 1/2 the size of the equivalent SLA pack. That also means with a small bit of modification the pingping pack and charger will fit within the box. I just weighed the box with those two inside-- it came to 11 lbs. Or, about 1/3 the weight.

I am astonished, and cannot wait to see what this is gonna be like. I found the Charger bike unpleasant to ride because the pack weight made it seem like I was riding through molasses. So, heck, with this lighter pack.. WOW. I might end up riding this bike more often.

1/2 the size and 1/3 the weight. Ohmygosh. It's coming true.

And, yes, the pack is covered in duct tape. Kinda weird choice if you ask me.

Weird and dangerous. Duct tape, exposed to the elements, turns to fiber and dust in about a year.

This makes me wonder...

Are there existing patents that control the large-format packaging?

By selling lithium batteries with no hard case is he bypassing a major restriction to getting large formats to market? Perhaps even as a small side benefit, Ping doesn't need to stock a dozen sizes of hard cases and shipping weight is lower.

PICS ?!

I don't know about any restrictions when you put them in hard cases, but I do know he makes loads of different sizes. He'll even make you a custom pack if you ask him. It may simply be that he would need too many different cases.

Is that pack going to be able to handle the load? I'm getting a pack for my Giant LaFree and Ping recommended a 24V 20Ah pack for the 400 watt motor the bike has.

Deron.

We'll see.. The rated power is slightly below the max rating of the motor. I haven't finished wiring the pack and haven't tried doing a test ride.

BTW I saw this posting talking about charging behavior

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/power-assist/message/71578

I just received the 36v 10ah pack that I intend to use on my Electra bike. I wired that one up and connected the charger. The charger did just what is described in that method -- it started out in red (charging) for awhile, then it entered a period of cycling the charger light green/red with the fan on only while red. The cycles were pretty long. According to the above post what's happening is the BMS is working to balance the pack and while it's doing so the charger shuts off.

Re: Have a 24v10AH pingping

I mentioned elsewhere on this thread I also have a 36v 10ah pingping pack. I just took it out for a spin meaning to use it to ride a bicycle to work today.

The bicycle is an Electra Townie w/ Wilderness Energy BD 36v w/ 35A controller. The power level is a bit beyond the rated max discharge of this pack.

The power cut out on me several times and I can assume the BMS unit detects an overly high discharge and cuts off the pack. Each time I disconnected the pack from the controller, then reconnected it, and the throttle would work again, until I put the throttle on high and then the pack cut out again.

Since I was only 1/2 block down the road I parked the bicycle and rode my motorcycle in to work instead.
