Got a dead lead battery, options?

should i buy a new one and if so, where the heck can you get them or 2) can i replace it myself with some other battery that i can put inside the case? or someone who might actually know what they are doing can open the case and replace the battery for me? mostly i like riding my bike not working on it. i am no grease monkey despite the fact that my father is a bike racer and i have taken apart bikes since i could sit up. i think it's the electricity part that is "scarey".

thanks for any info,

MJ

Re: Got a dead lead battery, options?

You can replace the batteries. It sounds like you have an ebike. Just open the battery case, and preferably take a picture, draw a diagram, or use masking tape to note which wires go where. Take the dead batteries to a battery supplier to get replacements. Make sure and get lead-acid absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries, unless they are gel batteries.

Also, you might take your charger too, and have them check the voltage output to make sure it works.

Re: Got a dead lead battery, options?

yeah, it's a pedelec. i contacted a dealer of this model and they say that no batteries will fit the case and only LONG batteries in Tawain will and they only make them for Merida and you can't get them, think that's bull?

i have a friend that works at a electric supply store. he's gonna have a look see.

thanks,

Re: Got a dead lead battery, options?

It probably is. Most batteries in scooters and ebikes are pretty standard sizes that you can get from almost any AGM battery manufacturer.

Re: Got a dead lead battery, options?

I take it you have a Merida, I have 2 of them and you can NOT get batteries for them anymore. They were custom made for the Merida and it is no longer in production. You can however replace the batteries with a slightly smaller one. The batteries that came with the bike were 12-volt 9-Amp Hour. There is a 12-volt 7-Amp Hour battery that will fit. I opted to modify both of my bikes. You could use 2 12-volt 12-Amp Hour batteries but it does require you to cut open the front of the battery box. I put in 3 to go to 36-volts but you could do the same thing with only 2 batteries and still run the bike at 24-volts. Here are some pictures of what I did.

Be sure you solder the battery connections in the same order as the ones you removed. Then all you need is some duct tape to cover the parts of the batteries which stick out. Works great, here is my bike with a third battery.

If you want to get more out of your Merida and change it from a Pedelec to a Power on Demand bike take a look at my Merida Modification post.

Re: Got a dead lead battery, options?

whoa! you are either the most AWESOME person on the earth or, you have WAY too much time on your hands. Just kidding about the second part. I am going to foward all this info to my very handy and bicycle savy father and see if he has the desire to pursue the battery issue in this manner but, it does seem pretty freakin' cool.

thanks,

MJ

P.S. a merida distributor in Vancouver Ca. has the whole battery, case and all for $225 + shipping if all else fails, we'll see?
