xb 500 rear axle help

xb 500 rear axle help

I broke the rear cable to the hub and reran all the wires through the rear axle reconnected and soldered everything and it's running back on par. the problem came when i realized the cause was the rear axle was spinning, it twisted the cable and it broke, my ? is if anyone knows if the rear axle lock washer/tensioner that fits in to the swing arm channel is the only thing the keeps the axle stationary? i can't find any online manuals that diagram the the rear axle assembly if any has any useful info it would be appreciated

Well, I don't think you'll find anything online or anywhere else explaining this. But, I have the XB600 and I've seen the 500 up close. I believe the wheel/axle setup is much the same. From what I see on mine...and only having the wheel loose once to change a tube....there is a flat "washer" (green in my pic) of sorts that fits on the axle on the inside of the swingarm and has a small retangular bend that faces toward the rear and this "bend" fits into the slot of the swingarm. I believe that is what keeps the axle from turning. I'm guessing this "washer" also has a rectangular opening and fits over a rectangluar shape in the axle. I think what you call a rear axle washer/tensioner is really just a "keeper/washer" of sorts on the outside of the swingarm and screwed to the swingarm...that keeps the wheel from sliding out of the swingarm even if the nuts on the axle are loosened. Suppose this is for safety in case they loosened while you were riding. Maybe my drawing below will illustrate more what I've explained. Then again, if the 500 is actually different then none of this may apply...but I just really don't think they would make it that much different. Note: just looked at how the drawing looks in the post and you probably can't read the text labels...but still think you'll see what I'm describing.

Oh wait...you already described the above in your question post. But to answer your specific question...I don't think there is anything else that holds the axle other than that washer w/tang. I seem to recall reading about an EMAX on here where the same kind of setup is used and their's slipped letting the axle turn as well...because the washer somehow got loose in the notch...and reamed it out. So, it seems to be a much used kind of design for holding the axle in place.

thank you very much, illustration was very helpful, I'm amazed that i cant find any manufacturer's diagrams anywhere. i realized i screwed up in that i didn't place the flat washer on in front of the axle nuts(stupid,stupid,stupid) only a matter of time before things started slipping! once again thanx for the help and you'll being hearing more from me, it won't take me long to break the next thing

Glad it helped. BTW, the guy I know with the xb500 has a problem with his...which he said happened after he had ran through a small puddle. It kept running fine until he got home. But when he went to ride it the next day the motor would not run. He says lights, horn, etc. all work fine. I told him I'd try and take a look at it for him this weekend. I plan to check the fuses first...thinking maybe a drop of water might have been slung up into the wiring and then maybe ran down to something and caused a short which could have blown a fuse. Do you know where the fuses are on your XB500? I'm supposing there's more than one...like on the 600. The ones on the 600 are just inline in the wiring...two I think underneath the rear near the controller. Guess I'll check those fuses first...and if they aren't blown test for voltage coming from the controller to the motor. My second guess would be throttle or controller but hopefully it's just a blown fuse.

there's one more fuse up under the front ferring(sp?)i think its a 15 amp fuse, if all the bells and whistles work but the throttle is not responding you may have to check the connections to the rear hub, and take the hub cover off on the brake side to check the motor connections
