No Gas Day May 15th

I just think it's amazing to me how our society is still in denial over the fact that;
well, one day off of the fuel pumps isn't really going to help much (maybe some).

I really like Chas_stevenson's idea of having parking facilities where we leave gas vehicles for the day
and they get charged a fee to help go towards electric vehicles. Cities should be able to use nothing but
electric vehicles for transportation; except emergency vehicles and transportation companies etc.

Re: No Gas Day May 15th

The concept of a "No Gas Day" is a good one, except the only way it will have any impact, is this:
We cannot just NOT BUY GAS for a day, because as the article mentions, we will either buy it on the 14th or the 16th. What has to happen, is: eliminate the use of gas for a day. The time period will have to be extended for probably a week. This means walk, ride a bike, use the EV's, maybe turn off the oil burner for your heat & hot water, cut the grass without the use of ICEs.
I dissagree about the articles Mom & Pop philosophy, The gas trucks fill up at the same terminal, and pump from the same tanks at the tank farms.
The bottom line is, to have any impact, we have to eliminate the use of gasoline and heating oil for an extended period of time, WITHOUT buying the fuel later to make up for the activities we put on hold. This will require disipline and a life style change. This is very difficult for most.
As for myself, the only changes I have made have been mowing the lawn with battery electric, and using the 28MPG vehicle whenever possible rather than the 16MPG SUV. The SUV is soon to be replaced with a 30MPG car. We also heated with wood for the last 3 years. Until my electric motorcycle is finished, and my experimental windmill is functional, I am going to be 80% dependant on gas and oil.
Eventually an electric car will enter into the fleet. That is probably a year off.

I'd have to say that I really like your comment, thank you.
You are right, and we cannot just NOT BUY GAS for a day, to me that is rediculous.
It's like telling society (ie public) that well "things will be fixed when we have the BUY NO GAS day."
This could even be a misunderstanding for some of the folks out there who don't really know what's going on with our oil problem. I dunno??
The time period is true and it takes time getting used to if you are used to your own transportation.
When we get to the point of eleminating GAS PERIOD, we will have to re-design designated public transportation routes.

My reply: http://www.7gen.com/blog/20080501/24074-gas-prices .. basically, I don't think the small blip is going to make any difference .. this same sort of campaign has been circulating in email chain letters for years .. and most importantly, "Make No Gas Day Every Day". The only way for this idea to make any long lasting effect is to make it widely practiced throughout the year by many people.

By owning and regularly driving/riding an electric vehicle you can make No Gas Day every day. Today will make the third day this week I rode my electric motorcycle to/from work.

I agree with you all. And I've been riding my xb600 to work each and every day for several weeks now...rather than once or twice a week. I'm taking every opportunity I can as well to help "educate" those unfamiliar with evs and the status of alternative transportation, etc.

By the way, just a point of info here...In July I will have had my xb600 scooter/ebike for 1 year. I have 1030 miles on it. And besides one flat (tube) tire due to a staple in the road...it's been "trouble free." Hope it continues to be this dependable. I continue to love the ride especially these days in our wonderful Florida springtime weather!

Re: No Gas Day May 15th

This scheme to adjust the price won't work very well because the demand/supply is the real problem. With the demand rising so quickly, and prices the way they are, it makes sense for oil production to go way up. And, consider the fact that emerging technologies are a wild card. Oil companies don't want the price to go up, because this will spur new alternatives. Something like Eestor could not only provide a viable alternative, but an advantageous one. The ICE could become obsoleted.

If I had any oil assets, I would want to produce it as fast as possible right now to cash in before alternatives become viable. And that is what they are doing. Consider how many wells are being drilled, and new technologies like horizontal drilling that are available.

So, why isn't the price going down? It is low. And the demand is going up incredibly fast in developing countries. Available oil is just going down. You can drill more wells, but this only increases production for a short time, and then it drops off. You need more sites and available sources, which we are simply running out of. We are seeing the beginning of peak oil.

The best way to lower prices is to reduce your oil usage as much as possible. Get an EV and use it. Save what oil we have left for necessities like transporting freight, agriculture, and industry which is much more difficult to make the transition to alternatives and will take more time.
