Portable power pack

There's none that I know of, but it would be possible to set one up yourself. It is not the best way to "charge" the battery through the charger due to losses. It is usually a better idea to construct a small pack and connect it in parallel with the existing pack. The added range will be about the same ratio of the added capacity. Then, when done riding the packs can either be charged in parallel if the same chemistry, or charged separately if using a different chemistry.

I have been contemplating doing this for my motorcycle. When considering added range, expense, and added weight/bulk, I've pretty much narrowed it down to either SAFT NiMH D or F cells, or LiFePo4 prismatic cells like those from Thundersky. The chinese D NiMH cells don't provide nearly their speced capacity.

Lead-acid don't add that much range for a range extender pack unless you make it pretty big, and lead is pretty expensive now making other options much more appealing. However, it would still work. Adding say 4 12ah batteries for 48v would add about 24% range.

If you constructed a 48v pack of NiMH SAFT D cells at $28ea this would run $1120 and probably add about 7+ miles. Another option is LiFePo4 going with 40ah cells if you can fit them which would cost about $1600 and add over 20 miles.

Zap says that there is a Lithium option for the Zapino. Does anyone know if this option really exists?

My question is how do you take individual batteries and make a pack of them and add it to my existing Lead Acid batteries on my Zapino? Do you add the volts (i.e. if the batteries are 1.2V and the Zapino is 60v do I need 50 1.2v batteries?

That's correct. Matching the nominal voltage may be a good place to start. It may require some experimenting to set the right voltage for the extender pack, which might need to be slightly higher if using NiMH. Using another chemistry other than lead-acid is probably not a good idea if you mind taking the time to experiment some. Also, the goals may influence the nominal voltage selection of the range extender pack.

Also if the Zapino lithium upgrade is 60v 40ah, when I add an extender pack and I am using AA or AAA batteries that are 1.2 volts each does that mean I can't exceed 800mAH per battery? (40AH/50 batteries at 1.2 volts each=8mAH). Does this make any sense??

When putting batteries in series, the voltage in creases but the usable capacity remains the same. So, 50 800mah NiMH AAAs in series would create a 60v 800mah pack.

Just read your comments about the Saft NiMh "D" , can you tell me what their A/H rating is and their impedance ,(litle suprised at their $26 price )
Have you ever use the Panasonic HHR650D they are 6.5 A/H and have about 2 milliohm impedance ,are available for about $16 to $18 each depending on quantity .
Have measured the impedance of those chiness "D" with 8 : 10 and 12 A/H have impedance from 7 to 15 milliohms. They are pretty good for low C discharge but terrible for electric bike or scooter .

I would like to know if replacing the Zapino lead acid batteries with higher voltage Lifepo4 batteries would increase the speed. Also, is there any problem with adding a higher AH battery than the 40AH?? I guess I would like to know what changes in V and AH batteries would affect the performance and range. Anyone know??

LFP 40AH is based on 2hr rate...almost double capacity of ZAPINO lead acid battery but 1/2 on weight,that would bring enough range. ZAPINO don't have space for bigger AH LFP battery.

With higher voltage,you have to change controller too .... a lot of job.

No extra space in ZAPINO,you have to pull out the old battery before install new LFP battery.It is a big job because you have to disamble all panel.
