Sparks and bike bucks

Need some help! Replaced battery harness on my 36BD also soldered a new connector to the controller, when I attempt to connect them now there is a large spark and the motor turns in spite of the fact that the controller is turned off. The 3 12volt batteries are wired in series. Previously the connector were bad and the spark was negligible. Any suggestion on what I am doing wrong?

Is the trottle really off? Is the polarity right? If the trottle is stuck on the spark would be big. You need another guy for what could be wrong inside the box. Replacing a connector is about my limit.

Throttle is off. Polarity appears to be right. Would the soldering of the connector have caused damage to the controller. If so, where is the best place to get a replacement. How would you go about trouble shooting the problem?

I guess it must have, unless something else happend at the same time. I'm just a when the magic smoke comes out, I get out the charge card kind of guy. For stock WE replacement, eco moto has them. Chrystalite stuff works too but there may be different connectors. And an ebay vendor called crazyman has a good reputation. Lots of less expensive scooter conrollers out there for brushed motors. It still could be a throttle issue but I don't know how to test one. Everybody is riding now that good weather is here but maybe later a real electronics expert will go online.

Re: Sparks and bike bucks

I'm pretty sure you couldn't have damaged it by replacing the connector. Too much wire for the heat to go through easily.

Really, only a few possibilities:

1. Fried FETs from either a backwards battery or other.

2. The throttle went bad.

3. There's a short in the throttle.

4. There's a short in the controller.

I'm leaning towards there being a short in the throttle. The hall sensor's legs probably are bare. If the throttle got dropped or the wires got pulled on or something, they could be touching. Opening it up, separating the legs, and adding a little hot glue to keep them in place would solve this problem.

A short in the controller is highly unlikely, but possible. Taking out whatever's causing it would fix that.

A fried throttle would mean you need a new throttle.

You could replace the FETs if they're fried or get a new controller. I'd upgrade, personally. :)

Re: Sparks and bike bucks

What happens when the throttle is disconnected (it can easily disconnect right?)

If it still spins, your controller is possibly fried?

Sorry, all I know and can think of :-( good luck!

Re: Sparks and bike bucks

Since I'm so stupid with electronics my way would be to first look for melted solder on the board near the wire I was soldering, and anything cooked looking in the controller. If It all looked good, I'd try a new throttle if nothing obvious was seen on the old throttle. The controller seems to work, it spins the motor. Over at endless sphere they talk about this kind of faliure on brushed controllers and the need for a kill switch.
