Hub motor with side load

I'm thinking about converting a golf cart or small car to electric by using simple hub motors. Using wheel motors is much simpler than making adaptor plates to mount a regular motor to the trany. I'm thinking about at least 2000 watts per wheel, preferable much bigger, such as 5000 watts. I imagine these will have characteristics similiar to the electric scooters like the xm2000 and z-20. But for mounting to a 4 wheeled vehicle, it needs to have a side load mounting. Does anyone know where to source these and how they would mount to a spindle/hub?

Mountain, I found some posts from you with these motors, can you give more information?

Have you heard about the custom mini-cooper with hub motors?

It seems like these would be ideal. The motors are German as I recall.

Re: Hub motor with side load

Happy New Year!

Thanks for the link, but the PMLFlightLink motors are huge power, water cooled, and very expensive motors that I can't afford.

I was thinking about hub motors similiar to the ones used in the scooters that will cost a few hundred dollars. The ones like those Mountain posted previously.

Does anyone know a good source to contact?

Thanks!

Munjin seems to be in the business of making these motors. Maybe he'd be interested in selling just motors rather than entire bikes?

BTW Todd Kollin (www.electricmotorsport.com) used to (and maybe still does) carry the same hub motor used by EVT (www.evt.com.tw) to build the EVT 4000/168. It's a lower power (1500W) and would only be good for a lower speed scooter. Hmm, EVT's website isn't responding, I wonder what that means.

Thanks again David,

I'm sorry I don't know who is Munjin? Googling didn't clarify either.

For electricmotorsport.com and evt.com.tw, they don't have the side mount design.

I've found and contacted Yongkang Success Permanent Magnetic Motor Manufactory since they had some promising motors.

But when I asked for details, they didn't seem interested, so I assume they are just prototypes, not production hub motors.

Mountain,

Are your motors prototype or production? If you have larger diameter such as 13" or 14", I'd be interested.

This link seems promising. Claiming highway speed, and available now and no minimum order.

I was told they are starting to go into production of these things big time.

You are going to have to spend $2500 to $3500 for a pair with power enough to make a small car move-like 10KW. Forget cheap scooter hubs. they will burn up trying to move the weight of even a small car.

Re: Hub motor with side load

When you say capable of highway speeds, do you mean 50-60 mph or near or over 100? I'm working on an electric inverted trike design and can't decide between a chain driven rear wheel or two hub motors up front... 144 volt system, would like to keep the 0-60 time near the 5 second range...

Re: Hub motor with side load

U dont require that much watts hub .U can can use 1000watts for each hub. Initially it takes more current to strt after accelaration it takes less current u can get acruise speed of 60kmph with 150amp battery of LIFePo5 48v. If u have any idea to design Back EMF electricity that u can run on two wheels neaxt two wheels will be producing electricity as BLDC motors can produce back emf for charging batteries.AMEN

Re: Hub motor with side load

whats your subjection for a classic mini, 645kg/1450lb total weigh, by the sub -chassis looks like hub motor will be a nice fit. i own one and I've been dreaming to install a EV kit, but prices, the heavy duty motors, the battery, has been a setback for a few years, so im starting researching again

Hubs looks like a very good option, specially that technology today has change a lot and more efience motors are build and cost less. here is some pix front and rear frame

your input and subjections will be highly appreciated
