Zapino Headlamp LED upgrade

I am interested in upgrading my Zapino's headlamps to more energy efficient LED bulbs. Has anyone done this and can it be done?

Re: Zapino Headlamp LED upgrade

Somewhere on this site someone showed pictures of a "hack" they did of using a normal headlamp housing to house several LED lights.

I'm sure those LED lights might be bright enough to be useful.. but I'm also sure it's not DOT compliant. I'm interested in LED headlamps that are DOT certified. Haven't been able to find any on a few hunting forays.

Actually, now that I think about it, the real need here isn't exactly "LED Headlamp" is it? It's "Headlamp that uses miniscule power, is bright, is DOT certified for use on a motorcycle, is affordable". Yes?

I wonder what the power consumption is of a comparable HID lamp?

Re: Zapino Headlamp LED upgrade

ZAPINO Headlamp is only 36W12V,it is very small consume compare with 3000W motor power.....only 1% but it is DOT approval already

So change the the headLamp is not a wise idea, don't have any help on power consume....and very dangerous.

I have big problem on electric consume too...is it 2007 ZAPINO or 2008 ZAPINO ? did you release the speed limiter ?

Re: Zapino Headlamp LED upgrade

HID's are 35 watts plus what the ballast draws, I am planning to do a HID conversion on my Z20. I am looking for better lighting and visibility, DOT approval is not a high priority. As long as I am not blinding people, no one is going to notice.

Since the lighting runs off 12 volts, I have been looking at DC-DC converters. I found a 150 watt converter for $85, it looks like it is made for a dry controlled environment, it has a mesh cover. If water splashed on it, the water would get into the circuitry and let out the magic smoke. I found a 120 watt converter that looks like it could take the environment for $130.

Another options is to use a small 12 volt battery for the lighting and let the current DC-DC converter charge that battery. I am leaning toward this option; because, it would be the simplest and least costly.

Re: Zapino Headlamp LED upgrade

My headlight lamp on my 2008 zapino went out (after only 2 months). I am looking for a replacement. I found some on google that look like the bulb but I am unsure of the size I need. There is T10 and T15 ones listed that look like the bulb I took out. The LED bulbs I found online are 2 Xenon White Car 9 LED Bulb Interior Light Wedge T15

My question is has anyone upgraded their lights on the zapino and if anyone here knows the size of the bulb.

Thanks,
Danyel

That page says it's for interior lights. I dunno about you, but I'd want my headlights to be a lot brighter than the usual interior light.

Re: Zapino Headlamp LED upgrade

I bought a replacement bulb. it does not work. I bought a multimeter. There is no juice to the bulb housing. Again the bright light works fine. The guy at zap told me to check the fuse. What should I do? Maybe the switch in the left handle is malfunctioning maybe a fuse? What should I do?

Re: Zapino Headlamp LED upgrade

Just to be sure, LED turn signals and brake/rear lights can be DOT compliant, right? Has anyone installed those $4 LED 1156 or 1157 bulbs for these applications?

Has anyone checked new Vespa ET4's European headlight? It has separate short and long beam bulbs H3/H7. If that headlamp would fit Zapino I think we would have a solution to have LED headlights. ET4's headlight looks very similar to Zapinos...
