XM-3000 is on the way

Hello, well after like 10 phones calls, after i pressed the right extention number i got to talk with a person, and my XM-3000 was shipped out on Friday. after getting a email telling me that it was backed ordered.

so i have calmed down- with the price of oil going to 143.00 a barrel.

and it will be in Baltimore,Md on Wednesday, then from there to my house in Delaware. so i hope i can get it by the weekend-

Re: XM-3000 is on the way

Glad to hear they arrive in Balitmore on Wednesday. That means mine will be there too. Hopefully that means I can arrange for mine to be delivered on Thursday. They probably don't deliver on the holiday and I'll be very sad if I have to wait till next week. I want to celebrate Independance (from oil) Day by watching the fireworks from the seat of my xm-3000.

Well, that is good to know! Maybe mine is also on the way, even though i got the 'backordered' email as well.

But i don't see that my card was charged, & i doubt they would ship it if it was not.. maybe i'll check again.

i think that they may charge THE credit cards after we get them to our house, cause if there are any problems with them being damaged or we do not receive them.

Re: XM-3000 is on the way

Yeah, mine is supposed to arrive here in the Seattle area soon as well. Hopefully in time for the long weekend so I can play on it! I've never owned any type of moped or motorcycle so I've got to go buy a helmet as well. Any suggestions? I'm hoping I can actually commute to work on this (about 6 miles) and it's not just a toy. My son bought an electric razor dirt bike and we've loved it so I was tempted to get one of these. I'd rather deal with batteries and electronics any day over piston pumping oil burners... Couldn't afford an electric car so I thought I'd start with one of these. I've been looking for a real picture of these? All I see are the 2000's. Whoever gets their's first should post some pix for us to check out.

Re: XM-3000 is on the way

i also have a helmet- its yellow so i hope it helps for people to see me. i also got a motorcycle jacket at a motorcycle store. i was going to get one off ebay, but i am glad i went to the store and got a new one that i am very happy with and at a good price also. i plan on using this xm-3000 to go to work too. its 8 miles one way. i have a great lock and thick chain. i can park it in a place where i will be able to keep a eye on it all day long.i got a jacket because if i fall i want to protect my body. i got a white jacket because i did not want the sun the get me as hot if i had a darker color on. this is what my jacket looks like its the white, silver, black, one http://www.newenough.com/browse/view_product_images/829 i may also get a pair of gloves too. the jackets are special, they have pads in the elbows shoulders and the back too. i did not get a leather one, i think it would make it much hotter to ride.

Re: XM-3000 is on the way

Hi all, I'm new here.
Mine arrived today in Santa Fe, NM. Had a hard time getting it out of the crate by myself, but managed. The wheels were pretty securely wedged into a welded metal cage. Some damage to the running board from rubbing against one of the metal posts during shipping. Hopefully they'll send a replacement piece I can put in...

Took a while to get it to start up (Apparently I just needed to flip the little fuse switch under the seat to "on" before starting it.) I've never driven a motorized two-wheel vehicle before, and at first it felt a bit squirrely until I realized that I had a low enough center of gravity to turn more sharply than I thought I could. I could only get the thing up to 25 mph though (collaborated with gps). I discovered just a minute ago however (I only got to skim the manual before, because daylight was disappearing and I wanted to get some seat time), that the I/O switch on the throttle side is actually the economy mode switch and not the "on" switch for the scooter itself. So tomorrow I'll test that hypothesis.
Also, haven't yet located the VIN number (haven't had much time tonight to spend in the manual or looking the scooter over though). Anyone know where to locate it?
Riding it was a lot of fun. I'll commute with it tomorrow and post more here when I get some time.

Hiya Zapdos, I've been riding big motorscooters for about 5 years, so I'll offer some advice.

First, remember that hitting the ground with your face can really ruin your day, even if you are only moving 30mph. I'd strongly suggest, if you value your jaw, that you consider a full-face or flip-up helmet. Also important: your helmet is often the first chance a car driver has to see you, it's the highest point and often visible above a car or hilltop. Go for a bright color, like schoolbus yellow or firetruck red. (White isn't as good as you might think, it tends to match too many other background objects on the road.) Flat colors are much more visible than fancy graphics, at least when viewed at 100 yards. Personally, I found the Nolan N102 to be a nice flip-up helmet, and it comes in a great hi-vis yellow color.

Also, don't think about riding without gloves. If you have any type of fall at all, your hands are going to be the first thing to hit the ground, and you probably want some leather on your palms. I'd also strongly suggest a motorcycle jacket. The mesh ones are great in the summer, the air flows right through to keep you cool, and the jacket keeps the sun off your arms as well as providing some road rash protection. Lots of choices out there, I've got a Joe Rocket that works well. Again, a bright color can be a good choice, like silver or yellow, both for visibility and for reducing the heat from the sun.

My electric vehicle: CuMoCo C130 scooter.

Re: XM-3000 is on the way

good advice, Mike. I'm also a motorcycle rider.. dual sport (a dirt bike with a plate). The saying in motorcycle circles is 'dress for the crash, not the ride'. It's kind of like a seat belt.. maybe you'll never need it, but if you do, you do. We are much more vulnerable on the road on 2 wheels. The cagers (cars) don't see us, & are really out to get us! Seriously, you do have to ride a little paranoid.. don't assume the guy ahead will wait for you to pass.. don't assume the lady on the cell phone won't turn in front of you. In traffic you have to watch everything.. no daydreaming allowed on 2 wheels.

The good news is you are safer than on a bicycle. With bicycles & slower scoots, the traffic is passing you, increasing your chances that someone will clip you or not see you. On a bike that has the speed to keep up with traffic, you 'interact' with fewer cagers. But you're also going faster, so an accident will have a greater chance of serious injury.

Here's what i think are basic necessities for riding gear, in the order of importance.. sort of:

Helmet. Full face. The modulars are nice, 'cause they flip up in the front so you can talk, you can put it on over glasses.. Dirt bike helmets are lighter, but you need goggles. A good dot helmet can be found under $100. There is a lot of controversy over snell rating.. do a search. Tests have been done that show the higher impact requirements of the snell rating actually transmit more G's to the brain than the dot or the euro standard.

Boots. The newer motorcycle boots have hinged ankle protection to help prevent over extension or too much lateral bending at the ankle. Good motorcycle street boots are comfortable, you can wear them walking around & they protect well. Oxtar, Sidi, Alpinestar, Gaerne all make good hinge style boots... but they start around $200.

Gloves. Like Mike said, get leather palms. I have mesh backs for hot summers, & full leather when cooler. The carbon fiber knuckle covers are nice, & give some added protection.

Jacket. One risk we face on the street is going down at speed. There have been a lot of studies done comparing the abrasion resistance of different materials. The winner? Leather. Get a good 1.3mm leather jacket. Some have zippers for ventilation. A lot of the motorcycle stores have clearances & specials, & a decent jacket can be found for around $100. They usually have CE armor in the elbows, shoulders, & back. That's for impact protection (when you hit the street or a curb, or a car). The mesh jackets are much cooler in the summer, & i wear one when it's hot, & it does get hot here in AZ! But they will not protect as well from abrasion, though they usually have good CE armor in them as well.

Pants. If i'm doing a long motorcycle ride, i'll wear perforated leather pants.. they have some knee armor in them, & a little hip padding. But it is a little more involved to put on pants, so most riders skip that. If i'm doing short rides on my ev, i usually just wear long pants.

Sunglasses, shorts & flip flops are not protective gear. I see people riding that way & i don't think they look cool, i think they are taking unnecessary risks. Maybe full motocross gear is overdoing it, but there is a minimum of gear that should be worn for basic protection. This stuff works, too. I've gone down many times on off road rides & the gear has saved my butt countless times. I've read too many accounts of riders who have hit a dog or a cat or slid out in gravel. The ones wearing gear pick their bikes up & ride off, most of the time.

Sorry about the long rant! But we do need to have some protection.. accidents happen, & on a scooter there's not much to insulate you from them.

Re: XM-3000 is on the way

WELL, i got the xm-3000. and got hurt before i got to ride it. the package is in steel. so you must unbolt the bars before you can even think of getting the wheels off the steel on the ground!!!

i had to use a car jack to lift it up in the air (the bike) then put plywood under the front wheel, so i could push the bike off the steel that was holding in it place. NO way i could lift the bike of the ground in the air to get it off the steel. i would where gloves cause i cut my finger on something.

the bike looks just like the pictures. the bottom kick flares got damaged in shipping on both sides - i took it for a test ride = like 200 feet- its all charged up, out of the box.

the maintenance instructions say - it would be advised to use a Bank Charger. can anyone help me with this. how much or how little should i spend on this Bank Charger? who is selling a good one that will last me. thank you-

Re: XM-3000 is on the way

The bank charger is one the can charge each battery individually. There are posts on doing that on this site somewhere. A better approach would be to get a battery equalizer. I wanted to build my own, but every technique I can think of to do it is patented. BattEQ is the best one, and it is very simple to make, probably $30 maximum in parts.

-72V mod
-Expensive bank charger until I come up with something better... Still trying.

As long as you do not want to sell it the patent does not matter.
My understanding is that you may build anything patented for yourself.

Before riding your brand new XM-3000 you might want to read up on lead-acid battery break in procedures, apparently they make a massive difference to battery life and performance.

I think you're right on both accounts Mr. Mik, I just want to be able to build these things for everyone on this forum. Is it still patent infringement if I sell them as a kit at no profit?

:) I had to use a car jack too. It was a pain getting it out... And mine was damaged in the same places.
On helmets: I bought this one: http://www.leatherup.com/p/THH-Helmets/THH-TS-41-Matte-Yellow-and-Black-Motorcycle-Helmet/53306.html ... I have no experience with helmets, but I wanted a full-face one, DOT and SNELL certified at a reasonable price and this fit the bill. It's nice. Hasn't been too hot or anything, good visibility.

I was right about that switch. It IS the economy switch. I switched it off and zipped up to 45 or so pretty easily on the downhill on the way to work. On the way back up though, I couldn't get up to much above 30. Wasn't a big issue as that particular road has a 30 mph speed limit. Other than that, my only complaint so far is that the mirrors don't seem to want to stay where I put them for very long.

XM-3000 is here

I put 40 miles on my XM-3000 today. Really fun, I'm new to this but I picked up a full face helmet and started checking it out this afternoon. It has no problem getting up to 45 mph on the straight but it really slows down on hills. Maybe it'll improve after a full charge otherwise I may have to change my route home to accomodate. At this price I think it could actually pay for itself if the batteries hold out and there aren't any other issues.

THink of it this way - even the patent is public knowledge. So even if you wanted to publish thier patent , it would be legal.

Of course I'm not a lawyer either , but I do know a little about the law.

BTW, thanks for all the info on the 3000

my only complaint so far is that the mirrors don't seem to want to stay where I put them for very long.

you need to tight the nut at the bottom of the mirror. after you put it on by hand and stopped turning it- you think that you are done. but your not done until you lift up the rubber at the base on the mirror. then you will need a wrench to tighten it down

When you put 40 miles on it, how far down was the fuel gauge? What was most of your driving- full power or economy mode?

Re: XM-3000 is here

I ran it a mix really, about 15 miles straight out of the box and then I put the charger on for a couple hours. After that I drove it 12.5 miles in a mix of hills to my daughter's home and then charged it while I was there 2 hours for the 12.5 mile ride home. The gauge stayed in the green the whole time. I'm going to try a commuting test run over the weekend. I have some really steep hills to deal with and it really slows down on those. I really don't want to get stuck without power, this thing is really heavy to push. Getting home is uphill most the way, about 6 miles...

Re: XM-3000 is here

I have been reading the posts asking about Bank Charging and also the BatEQ. Both of these require the addition of wiring to your scooter. You need individual wires to each battery to be able to bank charge. You also need the individual wires for the BatEQ. I have the Paktrakr and it also needs the idnividual wires. There was a simplified system that I went to per this thread under batteries and Chargers.

http://visforvoltage.org/forum/2969-simplified-bank-charger-wiring

wiring.jpg

The large bundle you see in the RED conduit is the wires from the terminal strip to the connector for my 5 battery chargers for bank charging. The terminal strip provided a place to connect the Paktrakr. I can also use the battery charger connector for a BatEQ if I chose to get one.

XM-3000 switches

Hey does anyone know what the lower red button is for on the right handle? It's a momentary spring loaded switch that looks like a electric symbol with a circle around it?

It is some sort of reset button.

On page 2 of the manual it says:

"If current drain is over 60A, the power will be automatically cut off to avoid overheating. Wait for one minute and then press the red button to restart the vehicle."

Yeah - I was wondering the same thing. I'm not sure I "believe" the manual. If the drain is over 60A then I'd expect the circuit breaker under the seat to trip and that is what you'd need to reset. However, it's possible that you need t do both and that the red switch is some sort of controller reset. I'll investigate this more.

BTW - I've never trusted the manuals ever since the XM-2000 manual said "push the green button to..." - there is no green button on an XM-2000!

A WORD OF CAUTION TO THOSE INTERESTED IN RANGE TESTING THEIR BIKES:

If it's the same as the XM-2000 then the bike's low voltage cutoff allows the batteries to be drained lower than is prudent (I can't remember the numbers right now) which results in a longer range but also results in a foreshortened battery life. I recommend a "real world" range of 20 miles. By "real world" I mean just get on and ride and don't worry about efficiency. If you follow this limit AND you fit either bank charging or a battery balancer then you should get around 300 to 500 cycles.

I toasted my batteries after about 1300 kilometers because I drove it to "empty" on several occasions. But now I know better... ;-)

All the best - and enjoy your scoots (those of you that bought from me feel free to enjoy them even more than the other guys ;-) )
