XB-600 Top Speed Problem

So I received my XB-600 yesterday. It seems that Xtreme has listened to the feedback concerning the damaged shipments. The bike came double boxed and on a wooden skid. Nothing was severely broken. There were some washers, nuts, and screws at the bottom of the carton, but I was able to find a home for all but 1 nut (I hope it wasn't important). The front kickstand was broken, the metal sheered. From the looks of it, half broke in the factory (half was rusted) and the other half broke somewhere along the way (half was still silvery steel). I figure that Xtreme will honor its warranty and send me a new part to attach. Also, broken were the turn signal lights. The orange plastic cover keeps falling of off. Either its poorly designed or poorly manufactured. If its the later, I figure Xtreme can just send me replacement covers, if its the former then I guess crazy glue will solve it. Note to Xtreme, include a small bottle of crazy clue in the tool pouch for such reasons.

Now here's the only real problem I've come across... The top speed on the bike is 12.5mph or 20kph. I knew the acceleration was going to be poor, but its bearable. I also knew that this thing was going to be a slug, but there's a big difference b/w 12.5mph and 20mph. 12.5mph is slower than I bike (and judging from my ride this morning, slower than most other people bike). I recall reading on the forum that someone from Canada mentioned that their models of the XB-600 are capped (speed governor perhaps?) at 20kph (12.5mph for those of us south of the 49th parallel). I'm wondering if perhaps I got a Canadian model.

Here are some crude tests and data that lead me to believe that there is a speed governor present:
- 1 rider (220lbs=100kg) riding it after assembly with a battery voltage of 51V tops out at 12.5mph.
- putting the bike on its back stand and cranking the throttle up (letting the rear tire spin with no resistance) tops out at 12.5mph.
- putting 2 riders on (over 320lbs) results in the bike topping out at about 10-12mph still.
- charging the battery overnight (10-12 hours) and 1 rider at 220lbs results in a top speed of 12.5mph

My reasoning is that the problem was not an issue with the battery voltage (or else fully charging it would have fixed it). My other reasoning is that adding a substantial extra load (100+lbs) should have reduced the speed, but it resulted in only a negligible top speed decrease.

Any thoughts? I'm kind of hesitant to start hacking this thing up until the warranty has passed. Plus, the shunt mod is a good idea (and will more than likely occur in the future) but first I want to make sure that nothing else is afoul.

Re: XB-600 Top Speed Problem

Sorry to hear about the shipping damage. Make sure you take some pics for X-Treme in case. Overall, as far as warranty parts they've been good to me so far. No problem. They should send you all the replacement parts just get your ticket in asap.

Regarding the speed issue. There is a problem there. I weigh 200lbs and out of the box it went 35KPH or 20mph. The Canadian model does the same thing from what I have read. You can check to see the model by looking at the serial number on the rear wheel. It should say 600W at the end.

Do you live on a hill? On a hill that will be the top speed without the shunt modification. And I don't mean hill....just about any incline will make it go 10mph. Oh I just reread your post and even on the kickstand you are getting 12.5mph....hmmmm. Does the rear wheel spin freely or is it difficult to rotate while on the kickstand? It should spin freely with only some friction because of the chain. If there are no wires loose anywhere then I would say there is something wrong with your controller or motor. My first thought would be controller.

Remember also that in the manual, the top weight they say to ride with is 220lbs. Some places say 300 but I think that is a bit much.

Hope you get if figured out.

find out if you plug together the two gray wires at the console assembly (head ligths) if so ,do unplug those two gray wires on the tiny black connectors.those are the restrict or turbo mode.May be you did it when you attached the plastic cover on the console assembly.

Re: XB-600 Top Speed Problem

Sorry folks, I just answered my own question (about an hours worth of searching the forum. MileyM mentioned the governor a few months ago. Apparently, its the gray wire up by the left handle bar. I figured it was just a goof on Xtreme's part and it had come disconnected so I reconnected it. Disconnecting it makes a world of difference, no more will bikers ride past me! No more will my commute to work be longer on an XB-600 than my normal bike! The acceleration is still chunky, but I'm sure that'll be fixed later in life.

So I guess an Emily Litella "Never mind" is in order for this topic. Hopefully it will hastily sink to the bottom of this forum.

Guys, please refresh my memory again about the location and function of those "gray wires." I want to see if the XB-500 has the same setup. (I received my new locking washers today, fingers crossed.)

They could be seen close to the left handle bar inside the console assembly. Very thin gray wires ending on very small black connectors.(Xb-600). On my Expresso S the wires come out of the controller for a short length .

Re: XB-600 Top Speed Problem

Just to get this straight. You re-connected the grey wires and the speed issue is dealt with or you disconnected the wires? Mine were never connected and the bike goes over 20mph. I am a little confused. I didn't think those wires go anywhere because they aren't even on the wiring diagram I believe. Very odd but you never know with these bikes.

Disconnected bike runs full speed .Connected ,it would restrict to about half.

Re: XB-600 Top Speed Problem

Wow, this was it on my Rad2go Expresso 2. After reading this string of Posts I looked and found it on my expresso 2, right outside of the controller. Mine was slightly different though - No black connectors, just 1 very small gray wire going out and going right back into the controller - It had a spice in the middle of it. I just cut the wire next to the spice and BRAVO instantly doubled the speed, now goes up to 26 mph. I picked this scooter up on a hunch for just $250.00 out of state, battery case torn apart, 4 dead 14 amp batteries, but still had full nubs on both tires and looked brand new. Thank You,Thank You,Thank You,. Email me direct at Sleigh1 [at] wowway.com if you need more details or pictures.
