Stealth: Rear tire looks like it has bubble about to burst

I think my rear tire won't last much longer.

It looks like there's a huge bubble sticking out on one side. It's about the size of an egg.

Is it doomed? Anyway to reverse the damage?

If not, then what's involved in the repair on a Stealth 1000?

Thanks.

That tire is badly damaged, so don't ride it like that. It can blow out in a second and you will have a hard time not crashing if you are at speed and riding on the rim instead of the tire/tube. You need a new tire and tube, and will have to pull the back end apart to change it out. I like to use the heavy duty thick "thorn proof" tubes you can find at different scooter parts places. TNC scooters has good prices on tubes and tires. you need 12 inch size. check the width on the bad tire. it might as wide as 3.0 inches.

Take some air out of the tire, that should fix it.

To change it, you have to remove the 3 bolts on the motor mount, 4 on each side of the axle, and one under the right side of the axle. From that point, you can change the tube. Nothing else is needed, so don't worry about the brake or transmission.

I bent my wheel, broke my trans, and blew my motor. Now I cry a lot.

I've seen people over inflate their tires before and cause them to balloon like that. It could be as simple as letting air out of it. Its not going to kill him, or even cause him to wreck. You let air out of the tire and see if it will still hold pressure, like you sitting on the scooter. Take it for a little ride and if it busts, you should be going very fast. I didn't tell him to let some air out of it and go blasting around town at full speed. But I guess sometimes things need clarified. I'll be more careful to explain myself in the future.

Automotive tires (no tubes) that I've seen bubble out were caused by the layers of the tire separating and the air getting between them. Riding around on a tire like that, once that damage has been done, will only make the layer separate more, creating a more dangerous situation. Deflating the tire to compensate only makes it worse as now the rubber on the tire moves more, creating more friction, generating more heat as the layers now are rubbing...

I've seen bicycle tires where kids have tried to overinflate them, causing a large lump to form. This is also dangerous because the tube is now trying to effectively remove the tire from the rim.

Maybe we're not thinking of the same situation?

I'd suggest just replacing the tire. Simple. Safe. No argument. :)
