stealth s1000 battery replacement

:? I just picked up two stealth 1000's at a Sam's club. I got them for $125 each, because they were trying to get rid of them. I don't believe Sam's wants to bother with them any more. One of them charges in three hours, but only goes 5 miles. The other never completely charges, so I unplug after 10 hours, but it goes 8 miles. Plug and play battery packs are $120 to $159 on the internet, and it would appear that they only last a year. Mighty expensive to keep my grand kids happy! Is it a big deal to get three 12v batteries, and wire together? They seem to be a lot cheaper this way. How can I get a lot of bang for my buck in batteries? Long battery life, good mileage, and cost are all considerations. Looking for any help I can get... Thanks.

Re: stealth s1000 battery replacement

SLA is crap for range and cycle life. Unfortunately, anything that ISN'T crap for cycle life and range would cost a lot more than $120. Right now, the bast "bang for your buck" battery is LiFePO4, but the initial cost is quite high. Probably about $300 for an equivalent pack, and that's for cheap LiFe.

But, it's pretty basic to wire up 3 12V SLAs in series. Just positive to negative...

BTW, your avatar seems to be raeping my screen at full 8Mp size. I see you have an EX-S880...:P

Where are you that they're being closed out for this low price? I'd buy one for parts at this price. They're $300 at my Sam's.

I have made several 36V battery packs from 3 12v batteries that I got from a local electronics store. They are just wired in series to make 36V. Be careful on the polarity of the connector so that it doesn't blow up your charger or scooter.

For what it's worth, it seems to me that Gruber Power Services seems to have the best prices I've seen on the individual oem batteries. They're at: http://www.gruberpower.com/gruberpower/advertising/Batteries/scooterbatteries/
I've ordered some batteries from they, but haven't put them into service yet.

I'm still waiting to hear where I can get that $125/scooter deal.

Re: stealth s1000 battery replacement

I'm a professional truck driver and deliver to Sam's clubs. I noticed the pair on the dock, wrapped up in plastic, on a wooden skid. After a couple weeks, I made the offer of $250 for the pair, and the manager took it. No chargers, and the batteries don't hold much of a charge. I also had to join Sam's to buy them. Not your average deal, but sometimes you just need to "make an offer". They just wanted to get rid of them, and I knew they could have been returns for whatever reason.
