KEY - replacement

Don't know about others but I can't seem to open the seat compartment without bending the key to this thing. Very soft metal. Took it to a locksmith and he just rolled his eyes when I said it was from China. Looked for a blank and couldn't find one. I'm afraid this is going to break soon.

Has anyone else had luck getting new keys made for these? Any I.D. on what key blank to use?

Re: KEY - replacement

I've tried three places but I haven't been to Walmart yet. Does your key have any number or identifier on it? Can't seem to find a blank that'll work.

Thanks,

Re: KEY - replacement

I had replacement keys for my XM-2000 made.
Used "ilco T61C" blanks.

KEY - # 50 did the trick

Many thanks mrladderman, you saved me!

Sure enough,as soon as I got to work this morning I busted my key getting the seat hatch open! I ended up taking a key they'd cut previously (that didn't work) and had them use it to cut a new one on the blank # you provided. Luckily it worked! Good thing a Lowes is nearby. I was able to get the broken piece out with some needlenose plyers...

I've got to do something about that (key-bending) seat hatch being so hard to open. Or maybe just cut the latching tab off...

Re: KEY - replacement

I have the same problem. every day I charge and every day i rebend my key to the flat shape.

I took of the spring for the seat latch and stretched it out a little bit. This seems to have helped a lot. Don't stretch it out too much.

Would be nice if the key material was a little stronger.

I've had a lot of those keys from wal-mart. I have found that they are so thin i never get car keys made (today's car keys even in a Kia or a Caravan are just too long and thin with that brand). But the same key cut at ACE works beautifully. Just make sure you know the make/model of something ELSE using that "blank" at wal-mart. same blank at ace ... just a different ID from a different manufacturer. Sometimes they'll even have a cross reference sheet. I snapped one a day before switching. Took 'em all back and got refunds, too. My caravan had no sense of humor.

Re: KEY - replacement

I found this site and one of the first things I found was seat latch can and will bend keys. I lubricated mine with WD-40 and PTFE and worked it in till smooth. I also polished seat latch to make it extremely smooth. I coated it with general purpose grease and it works better-er but not great.
I went to a real good Locksmith and brought my glove bos key lock in with me and he determined it to be a Kawasaki key way. I made a dozen keys and broke only two in a year. I think the reason is a deep cut near middle of key. I am still trying to find a new seat latch mechanism for my first XM-3000. My newest one came last week and already I racked up over a 100 Kilos on it. Every time I ride it I get more distance on a charge before needle gets to yellow. I get 21 actual miles till yellow zone. I had a Chevy s-10 144 volt electric and don't plan on going into RED zone for battery life is cut big time. Keep it into 1.9 to 2.0 v/c.
Lube all locks especially seat mechanism.

Re: KEY - replacement

I have no problem with the key(s) on my 5000Li.
But, the 5000Li was made at a different factory so maybe they used more sturdy keys?

What are the 3000's keys made of?

Cheers, Gary

Re: KEY - replacement

oh i think the 3000xm keys are made out of lead or perhaps tin. It might even be jello that has been spray painted silver.

Re: KEY - replacement

On my 3500li I had to do a little adjusting by opening the seat slightly and bending the bracket a little in the direction it needs to go to line up perfectly with the latch. On mine, after considerable effort to get it to work normally I still have to push the seat lightly away from me while turning the key to open the seat. It really isn't a big deal though. But jello, that's ridiculous it's more like caramel or taffy ;)

Re: KEY - replacement

The 5000Li keys (you get two) are made of sturdy metal, almost "impossible" to bend without using "excessive force".

The next time I get to WalMart (the least expensive nearby key-maker), I will see what blanks match my keys.
