How hot is too hot?

dogman, you know first hand but here's my concern; My BD36 routinely pulls 40+ amps and over a 1000 watts. The controller was only 99 and the battery cool (both in the box) but, the motor was at 135 when I stopped. It was near 90 outside and dry. Is that too much continuous heat?
I think when I successfully get my CA wired to hold the amps to <40, things may change. Why does the 40 amp controller put out 50 max? Now I know Foxx wasn't lying about the battery running 4C for extended times. The a.m. ride was barely warm and pretty fast at 25mph on the flats. I used about 150 amp/hr for 6.3 miles. That's like 25 amp average. wow.

Re: How hot is too hot?

That should be okay. They can get fairly hot, but even crappy winding insulation should be good to 200°F or more. Same for the magnets.

If it was a brushless, that'd be a different story, because the windings are what produce all the heat, and in a brushless, they're in the center, don't get good cooling, and the motor is much hotter inside than out. With a brushed, however, the windings are on the outside case, so it's about as hot outside as it is inside.

Er...I'm not sure you got the 150Ah thing used part right. Even cars don't take 850Wh to go 1 mile. I think you mean 150Wh (24Wh/mi)?

10-4 on the Wh. and Whew on the heat. Thanks, I'm stayin' on that throttle!

How does a brushed motor work with the windings on the outside? On my Gaint Lafree the windings are on the armature, the brushes provide juice through the commutator, there are four big magnets on the case around the armature.

Re: How hot is too hot?

Brushed hubs are sort of the inverse of brushed regular motors, because the outer housing is the part that moves.

Here's a thread where I took my BD-36 apart to check out how it was doing inside. The pics explain better than I can.

That makes all the sense in the world to me now, "because the outer housing is the part that moves". It's the same as my motor, the windings move, only one is on the outside and the other is on the inside.
