Has anyone installed an alarm on their bike?

I've been thinking lately how much I enjoy this bike and if it were to get stolen...how much I would miss it! Then I was reading the 700Li has an alarm so I was wondering if anyone thought about installing an alarm on their bike. What are your opinions? Think it's alarm worthy?

I thought about it but decided to lock the steering column with the key, throw the breaker under the seat, and park where I can use a keyed cable lock to secure the bike. This seems like enough security for me. But, I live in a small town and park in very public places, which also affected my decision.

Re: Has anyone installed an alarm on their bike?

I've been using bulldog auto alarms on eGO's and my electric motorcycle for a few years. They work well and I like not having to "lock up" at every stop. They are 12 volt alarms (almost all are) so I just center tap the pack to power it. All the bikes have powercheq units so pack balance isn't much of an issue.

There are several nice motorcyle alarms that are more expensive. Some with up to 1 mile radius paging. I find them a bit overkill though. The worst I've seen with these alarms is a bike left all day at the university was about fifty feet from where it was parked laying on it's side. After a would be theft was attempted and thawarted by the loud siren. Granted people don't pay much attention to car alarms going off. But it does seem to un nerve the thief enough for them to walk away.

Re: Has anyone installed an alarm on their bike?

I purchased and installed a Gorilla Motorcycle Alarm System on my E-Bike. I also installed a back up alarm which is a simple Motion Detection Alarm from The Source (Radio Shack)under the rear Tool Trunk.

Thanks,

Thanks so much! I think I'll check into the Gorilla alarm, is that also motion detection. I want something that will detour theft at the slightest knudge of my bike.

I'd be a little cautious with the "nudge" test. As with cars that have super sensitive alarms, some people react badly to them, including deciding to vandalize them for sport. People may walk or drive by with rocks to hurl at the vehicle just to set the annoying alarm off.

I got a reasonable deal on a motorcycle u-lock styled lock from overstock.com, I think. If you like, I can try to look it up the exact URL.

The Gorilla Motorcycle Alarm System has 7 sensitivity settings for the Shock Sensor, it is on the most sensitive setting by default. I lowered my system down to one lower sensitivity setting so that large trucks, buses, Streetcars and the wind does not set it off. But touch the scooter body even slightly and it will give 1 warning beep, if you touch the scooter again the 125db 5 tone alarm goes off.

Thanks,
Ken Finch

Awesome! I'll do some google searching on the gorilla alarm system. Sounds perfect, if it's not too costly.

Thanks!

Well the model I have the 6007 is no longer available, but the newer model has all the same features plus a optional paging feature.

Re: Has anyone installed an alarm on their bike?

Ken,

I did a lot of searching on ebay for the gorilla alarms...looks like the going price is $79 + shipping. Unless you get the one with the pager, then it runs around $150. Do you know if I get the one without the pager if I can still turn off the alarm with the remote from a short distance? Or do I have to be right next to the bike? Maybe these are stupid questions, I know nothing about alarms. I've never needed one until now. I work at a high school and I would just feel better know my bike isn't being messed with.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Has anyone installed an alarm on their bike?

LOL - the last person that "messed" with my bike was our high school principal (I work for our school district as well). He sat on my bike to see if he wanted to get one. The idea of a electric intrigued him. The physics teacher was also present and just as interested.

I don't know your school setup, but in my district, they let me take my bike down the loading ramp and into the loading dock area of the high school. I park in there using the space as my own personal garage. Teachers also bring in there bicycles.

I could see students wanting to set off your alarm just for fun, but I also see why you would want one.

The Gorilla sounds like a great idea.

Re: Has anyone installed an alarm on their bike?

Laurie,

I like the way you spell your name! LOL!!! Nope, nowhere at my school to park inside. We don't have a garage, there might be a loading dock somewhere....I just park in the teachers lot. But my spot is in plain view of the entrance where the kids go in and out all day.

Ken: How much does this gorilla alarm drain the battery? And why do you have the 2nd alarm?

Thanks,

Re: Has anyone installed an alarm on their bike?

The Gorilla Alarm System uses 70mA of power while armed or disarmed, and uses 1.6 Amps when sounding the alarm. The alarm sounds for 60 seconds then resets back to Armed Mode. When you deactivate the alarm with the key FOB it will beep twice if it has not been set off and will beep three time if the alarm was set off while you were not around.

Thanks,
Ken Finch
