Hi all. I am fairly new to all this stuff but am getting more involved every day. I have on order one of the new XB 700Li Ebikes from Xtreme. But while I wait for it to get here I am stuck with my older 700 watt 48V SLA powered scooter. I am curious as to how much trouble it would be to convert it over to a Lithium Ion pack from Ping. It seems that his packs are built with a BMS and come with a charger, so those two items are covered. But what about the old controller. Would it work with the Li Ion or would I have to replace it too.

The question would be... does the discharge rate from Ping's pack support the wattage required by your bike?
If your bike requires 80A and the Ping pack you're looking at cuts out when the current is over 40A (to pick numbers out of the air) then the pack will cut out on you all the time while you're riding.

A ping 48v 20 ah battery would handle the discharge rate of a 700 watt bike no sweat. Your controller should be fine too. The pack will have a similar voltage to 4 sla's with a full charge. For bigger bikes, like 1000-1500 watts, you need a bigger ah pack, such as a 30 ah. I'm at about 120 cycles on my ping lifepo4 and couldn't be happier. Range is the same as when it was new. Speed will stay about the same, but it may accelerate a smidgen slower. But speed will not drop off as you ride like the sla's. If you need new batteries, its very sensible to go lifepo4.

Thanks for all the input. I was thinking that it would be ok but I just wanted to check before ordering. I was asking because I learned from this forum that the LifePO4 packs take a different type of charger, and so I didn't know if I needed to put in a specific controller for the new type of batteries.
