Question about 36v battery and controller for 24v motor

I'm getting into really unknown territory, (for me anyway) in that I bought a 36v 20ah ping that I will be receiving shortly and I want to find out what kind of controller I should get. This is for a Giant LaFree that has a 24v system. I'm wondering if I can use the oem 24v throttle, or do I need to get a new 36v throttle to match the controller. I'm looking to simplify the system to a certain extent in removing the speed limitation and probably the torque sensor on the transmission. So inputs would be from the brake switches and throttle.

I'm looking at this: http://www.tncscooters.com/CT-312C1.php

Would this be a good choice?

I'm planning on doing a lot of pedaling, as I'm used to road biking and I like it. I'd just like to get to work in less time. I don't want this to be a "motorcycle." I have a BMW and that works fine for me. I just want to pedal to work in less than the 75 minutes it takes me now.

Thanks,

Terry

Thanks.

Could you tell me please why this would be a better choice? I'm leery about the connector that wants input from a speed sensor. I want to get away from any speed sensor and mandated speed limitation.

Do I need a 36v throttle to go along with this, or will input from th OEM 24v throttle work?

I didn't have to use the speed sensor. I think this goes to a speedometer of some sort. I left it open.
It is a better choice because it is rated to higher power. Which means it will stay cooler and runs efficient. They have a 36V throttle at the same site. The 24V halls effect throtle would work, but it will not idicate the proper voltage on it meter, if it has 3 leds for full, mid and low.
Make sure you order the appropriate connector while ordering everything else.
Good luck,

Hey Terry,

What did you pay for that battery from Ping. I got a quote from him for a custom size battery for $470.00 (36V 20Ah battery and charger) plus $98.00 shipping. I have been following his auctions and the last battery went for $425.00, this included charger and shipping. $143.00 extra seems like a lot to have the battery made into a different shape.

Deron,

That $425 was me. I was surprised to win the bid because they've been going for more, but I guess I got lucky. :)

Lucky you, first time I heard of a ping auction going less than his direct buy price. You got one $25 less than I paid last april. Very nice. Less bidding on Pings packs is either a good sign for us, less inflation for lithium. Or a bad sign, more poor schmucks getting taken on cheeze clyindrical cell packs to save less than $100.

You can use the 24v throttle since the led's on a 36 volt one will tell you nothing untill you get about 1/2 mile from the bms low voltage cut out. On the sla's they give you an earlier warning since the voltage drop is more gradual. Just call both lights a system on indicator and don't worry about it.

Thanks!

My 24v OEM doesn't have any lights anyway. The lights on th La Free are below the seatpost?!? Maybe I'll just get the throttle anyway since it's only $10.

The price may come down on batteries with this economic crunch affecting how people spend their extra money. But if these things start being treated more as viable transportation than "toys", who knows?

I think it's probably the economy like you said, plus all the other guys competing against Ping. I checked the feed back on these other sellers and they seem to be OK. I wonder what there bottom line is.

Yeah, it could be interesting, the economy (along with gas prices still being pretty high) getting tougher could put more people on bicycles and that may lead to more LiFe battery sales. More battery sales could mean, lower prices, more choices and easier to get.

Better look at more than just ebay feedback. There are a lot of guys having big problems with the packs made of small round cells. Most of the problem packs come from one seller who likes to change his ebay identity pretty often, and supposedly even sells a book on how to fake ebay feedback.

In any case, the small round cells are pretty much proven to be inferior to the foil pouch ones Ping uses. The best cells are the ones with the terminal bolts on the ends, and come in 10ah cells.
