Electric Hub Motors ... ???

I'm really a dummy when it comes to anything mechanical or electrical! What would be a good choice for an electric motor for my Electra Townie ... ???

I need to keep the gears that came with my bicycle, so I can still ride my bicycle with no motor as often as possible. I need the exercise and enjoy riding, but also need to commute to various job assignments where there is no bus service, and too far for me to pedal (10-15 miles each way).

I want to get something that will last many years, and allow me to attain speeds of at least a good solid 35mph (45mph would be better, so I could ride on the country roads where the speed limit is between 45-55mph), with my weight, plus groceries (will not be riding fast with groceries!!!, only around 10mph then!).

When I go to work, my weight is around 210, plus my large backpack, which normally weighs around 10-15 pounds. Groceries will add another 15 pounds, sometimes more ....

So, I need a good quality motor that will easily carry over 250 pounds, reliable, effecient, long lasting ..... I've been checking around on different websites, but am still a bit overwhelmed ... !!! Help please ... !!!!

Re: My Electra Townie ...

The other only motor would be a crystalite 5304, running at 72v. Hope you have some money though, like with the red hornet the battery will cost ya. Most guys that have a bike that hot have spent $2500-$3500 on it, mostly for the batteries. To run that motor at 72v, you either need a ton of nicads, sla, or a very expensive lipo or lifepo4 battery. With the lifepo4, the two 20 ah 36v batteries would cost at least $1200, but would give you lots and lots of range. The need for so much ah is keep the discharge rate near 1 amp per amp hour. Or, for several thousand, you could go with 10 ah of more expensive cells like PSI, Lifebatt, or A123 that can do with much higher discharge rates.

Sooo.... Have ya looked at gas scooters? My wife bought a used chinese one for $700, making the $1500 I've spent on ebikes look stupid. New, a 150 cc scooter is under $1500 and will go 60mph. It gets around 70 mpg and my insurance on it is only about $100 a year.

Seriously, if you need to ride on roads that have no good bike path or a wide shoulder so you need to keep up with fast traffic, I would go with a scooter, or spend a lot more money for an electric scooter or motorcycle that can keep up. The only reason I ride 30 miles a day on my bike is because I have good routes to ride, mostly bike trail that is very safe.

Be the pack leader.

I think you want a scooter or motorcycle, not a bicycle.

I have an Electra Townie and think 35 miles/hr is beyond safety for that design. However motorcycles and scooters easily handle the speed you're talking about.
