I build my e-bike using a GM 36V 500W hub motor which I over-voltaged to 48V
using the GM 48V regen controller. At the time that I purchased the motor
GM did not offer a 48V motor, but I recently noticed that they have added
a 48V 1000W hub motor to their lineup. Overall, I'm happy with the bike,
but a little more power would be nice. Does anyone have any info about
the GM 48V 1000W motor?

I don't know about these motors, but the real question is "Are you changing controllers when you get the 48-volt motor?"
The reason for this question is the controller is what regulates the power to the motor, not the rating of the motor. If your 500-watt motor is doing well then replacing it and using the same controller will gain almost nothing. In other words you will not notice the difference. As a matter of fact the 1000-watt motor will want more power when cruising than the 500-watt motor which will decrease your overall range.
If the current controller is putting out a maximum of 21-amps at 48-volts you are already pushing 1008-watts to your current motor. If you replace the motor you will still only be pushing 1008-watts to the motor and you will probably not feel any difference in the 2 motors.

Scott, how fast does your bike go on 36v and on 48v? I'm thinking that maybe the 48v motor will give you more torque but potentially less speed. Do they have V vs rpm diagrams published for their motors?
It would be great if there was a thread on VFV that would give a recap of the various hub motors currently available with rpm vs voltage.
To complicate things further, they also have a 750w 36v motor. Pricing seems really good, sounds like a good choice.
There is no physical difference between the actual motor itself. They just change the controllers. I actually have the 1000w Golden motor and it came with a 48v 30A controller. It peaks at 1800-1900w so let that be some word for thought.
