Batteries on a Schwinn S-750

After close to a year the batteries are dead. They started acting up at 9 months as it is.

What are the options, I can just put more SLA's in it, but what is the chance that they will last any longer?

My other issue is that Schwinn claims it has 12V15amp batteries in the scooter but no one makes such a creature, though i have seen 12V 17Amp SLA's. I wouldn't mind going Li-ion, but then we are talking about spending more money that the scooter is worth. And i am also assuming that would mean a new charger as welll correct?

Ideas?

Re: Batteries on a Schwinn S-750

afaik, the S-750 takes three 12v, 10ah batteries for 36v, 10ah, for 360 total watt-hours. I have no idea where they get that 15ah thing. You can buy better batteries than the stock ones 'BB battery' for instance. They should give you longer life. Best thing you can do for your batteries is not run them down too far and keep them charged up even when you aren't using the scooter.

Sheesh, those guys change specs so much it is crazy. That is definitely an odd battery size. I guess your best bet is to measure them and then find the largest amp-hour batteries you can that fit the space.

its a bit odd. I have seen 17amp batteries, but wasn't sure if that would be to much for the controller. Which i can never find anything about.

Re: Batteries on a Schwinn S-750

tempustemper,

The controller does not care what the amp hour(AH) rating of the batteries are. The AH rating is how much energy the battery will hold.
The controller will only draw what it needs for the batteries in amps.
Amps is the current flow to the motor, AH is a rating of stored energy in the battery. These are 2 different measurements.
The controller does the controlling of the current (amps) not the battery.

You can replace the 12/15 batteries with 12/12. They are the same size and should be easy to find.

Yeah, I am pretty sure the 17's will be physically too large. Absolutely no problem with the higher ah rating if they do fit though.

Re: Batteries on a Schwinn S-750

I recently bought a Schwinn S-750, and I was looking to see if anyone was selling batteries that fit it before I bought it. Didn't find anything. Schwinn sent me an order form with the scooter. According to the form the batteries are BA-1215-SLA-01 $53.99 each 12V15ah SLA (2 required).

Re: Batteries on a Schwinn S-750

You can get the batteries for about $42 a piece at Batteries Plus. They have a retail store location finder. http://www.batteriesplus.com/

The S-750, if I remember correctly, takes the same number (3Qty) 12V batteries as my brother's S-1000. I bought 3x 12V 10.5 aH batteries for $145 approx. from Batteries Plus.

One thing to note: You will need to also buy the wire and connectors if the scooter does not come with the original battery pack. Btw, the Schwinn battery packs have soldered the wire connectors to the batteries, so you'll have to deal with that if you buy batteries from a third party - or buy new wire and connectors.

Hope this makes sense. Good luck.

You might also check on line. Batteries range quite a bit from vender to vender. I haven't had much problem getting them on line.

Re: Batteries on a Schwinn S-750

After a few years of infrequent use/charging of my S-750, I plugged in my charger yesterday. A day later a strong burnt/electrical smell was in the room. I opened up and removed the battery pack. I was pretty surprised to see a several holes in the 3 now misshapen batteries and visible liquid in the holes. Obviously these batteries were kaput and didn't take well to charging. One hole was where a plastic protrusion from the floorboard was pressing downward.

I am a bit surprised that they didn't die better..being AGMs (I think) I thought they would simply stop working/charging well and not rupture/overheat. They were 3 Enduring 12V 10AH batteries in series. Now I need to decide if it is worth replacing them.

I wonder if part of the problem is charger that came with the scooter...I am pretty sure it is not a high quality one that tries to avoid overcharging.

I found my manual and it states "Although you cannot overcharge the batteries using the Currie "Smart Charger", we recommend you do not leave the charger plugged in for more than 24hrs maximum."

I have violated the 24hr max recommendation quite a few times.

Re: Batteries on a Schwinn S-750

I think the batteries are actually gel type, not AGM. I believe I had a "thermal runaway" that for some reason that caused my batteries to basically melt.

Re: Batteries on a Schwinn S-750

I have a Schwinn S750 24 Volt. I ride this every day as my only transportation. I have bought 12V 15 Amp Hour batteries several times. I pay a lot less than everyone that I've seen on this forum. The last set I bought was $72.00 delivered. Here is the link to go to: http://www.techbatterysolutions.com/eZip-750-Battery-p/1319.htm When you get there click on the upgrade from 12AH to 15AH. I have customized my scooter with a second set of batteries and literally tripled my mileage and my battery life. Let me know if you are interested as to how to do it and why doubling the batteries triples the distance and battery life.

Re: Batteries on a Schwinn S-750

I never leave my SLA EZIP batteries unattended for more than four hours or so, and I never leave the charger on for more than two hours after the light goes green. Why? See above.
