Stuck throttle in cold weather

Hm, no I haven't. Mine is a 2002 model and the throttle is mechanical all the way from the handlebar into the controller. I suppose something could be frozen inside the cable ?? Being in Silicon Valley I've never had the opportunity to experience the EVT in truly cold weather (ahem).

I had a partially stuck open throttle on my Luyuan E-Bike. Turns out it was not the throttle at all but my throttle wire connections at the controller had gotten wet and was introducing electrical resistance in the throttle wires even though the throttle was off. Because the magnet and Hall Transistor in the throttle converts magnetism into a electrical resistance signal, the controller saw electrical resistance even though the throttle was not sending a resistance signal. After I dried the wires off and put sandwich baggies on them then wrapped them in duct tape I have not had the problem again.

Well if it is a mechanical throttle with the cable going from the throttle to the controller then your thinkink is probably correct. My throttle has a magnet in the throttle handle that rotates. And in the body of the throttle is embedded a Hall Effect Transister that detects the magnet movement and coverts that movement to a electrical resistance signal whinch then travels down a wire to the controller.

I get the same behaviour below freezing. I've been driving all last winter without this problem and it's been starting to happen this year. I suspect water in the cable. I have a 10 km commute and it makes it a interesting drive to use brakes in combination with the "Economi-setting" to regulate speed.

This is the last winter I'm driving the EVT-4000.

I might buy BMW F650CS and drive it on gasoline for a while and the convert it to electric. It would be really nice to have real breaks from Bremo with ABS.

I can also confirm that the same thing happens to me. I drove all through the winter. But after only 5 minutes driving below freezing point the throttle froze. I still do not know if it was the handle in itself or the cable. But after taking everything apart, spraying some anti-freeze-oil onto the handle bar and putting it all back again the problem disappeared. Only that the freezing days were almost over so I really do not know if it will work next winter.

Is your throttle made by TOYOTA? (Prius)--My VECTRIX and HONDA throttles all work OK! Seriously, it is probably caused by water, and lack of lubrication, in the cable and/or handelbar mechanisim.---Use a lightweight, synthetic oil to lubricate it, then give it a try.-Bob

I recently bought a brand new EVT 168.
This is a state-of-the-art model, with a 2800W brushless motor and disks rear and front. Beautiful machine.
In 2009 EVT developed a complete new BLM controller. However, the throttle signal is still passed to the controller by a conventional bowden cable.
I suppose that EVT uses standard gas scooter equipment for this purpose.
I got instructions from the shop about frost problems:

A malfunctioning throttle at below zero temperatures is caused by ice inside the throttle cable.
Don't force it, but put your scooter in a warm area and allow the ice to melt.
Disconnect the cable, lubricate it and replace, ensuring no water can drip into the cable.
This should do the trick.

So appearently it is a known problem.
