Ive got a hub motor with 3 power leads and 5 hall sensor leads.
1)Can I connect it to a peddle first style controller and just not use the hall leads?
2)Can I connect it to a start from stopped controller and not connect the hall leads? Will it then work as a peddle first system?

The motor that you have is a (brushless) motor, those 5 wires tell the controller how to feed the 3 power leads the the voltage in time with the rotation of the motor ! without the signal from those 5 wires the motor will hum and smoke and burn !! LaTeR

You can do this if you get the right controller. I currently have a brushless Wilderness Energy BL-36 and it does not have then hall sensors on the hub motor. It uses a start from stop controller and it connects to the hub with only three wires.
I also have experimented with another controller customized by Knuckles over on Endless Sphere, but it was just too powerful for the BL-36 without a soft start mod, so I ended up using it for my XB-500 scooter.
You'll get a little vibration on the start, but it smooths out as you speed up. These controllers use back EMF to sense the motor position.
I don't have any experience with the pedal first controllers, and am not familiar with exactly how they work. I had always assumed that they worked with the pedal sensor as opposed to using a grip throttle. Correct me if I'm wrong here . . .

yes the peddle sensor I had on my odd bike was different than the ones on normal peddlecs. Thats why i needed to change the controller because with my previous setup the controller blocked any current if the peddles werent spinning. Standard Pedlecs dont do that.
Anyway thanks for the advice. Do you know where I can buy one of the controllers u suggest, with a throttle (how many leads input is urs?) Im in the UK
