My worst fear

My worst fear is that I will, without thinking, set my Vectrix keys in the under seat storage and have it shut. So I have a spare key attached to a 24" retractable spool where I can reach it and it is out of the weather. Anybody else hiding a spare key?

Re: My worst fear

I have a spare at home, but I never thought I could put the original there as, when around the bike, I always keep it in the ignition keyhole.

Re: My worst fear

got exactly the same fear about locking myself out. But hiding a spare key attached to the vectrix seem to be an even higher risk. I thought of trying to find an alternative open mechanism for the under seat compartment. Couldnt yet find any alternative so at the end I just be very careful to not put the key anywhere near the compartment.

Exactly, why ever put the key into the boot in the first place?

Outstanding question, Mik!

If locking your key in the trunk is your "worst fear", then that's easily resolved. My key is either in my pocket (i.e. getting off scooter) or in the ignition (i.e. getting on).

Personally, I'm much more concerned with idiots in cars not "seeing" me and doing something stupid, potentially resulting in an inability to keep the rubber side down. And beyond that, I'm also much more concerned that I'll misjudge my maximum range and end up needing to call my wife to come pick me up. But putting my keys in the trunk would never have occurred to me.

Perhaps if you need someplace to set them down, you should open the glove box and set them in the little indentation in the glove box door? At least that won't close by itself. But given that my motorcycle pants have pockets, I wouldn't put my keys anywhere but in my pocket.

Re: My worst fear

My spare key is attached to a spring loaded retractable reel (24" long made of polyester cord) and the reel is attached to the scooter. Even with a flashlight it can't be seen. You must know exactly where to place your hand to retrieve it. I can pull the key away from the scooter and detatch if from the reel. It's not uncommon for me to set down an object where it dose'nt belong, just for a second. Ha Ha.

Re: My worst fear

I don't have that fear at all. Not that I'm not perfectly capable of putting stuff down where it don't belong, but my seat is so hard to latch, it rarely ever actually closes anyway! HAHA!!

Kind of nice though not having to switch the bike off just to grab something out of the boot or throw the mail in there. When I'm riding, my butt keeps the rear seat down so it can't fly up, but when I haul the bike for service, I have to remember to make sure the thing is actually latched down!

Re: My worst fear

Attach one of these to the underside somewhere and keep a key inside it:

Re: My worst fear

I easily solved the issue buying a key holder attached to a 20 cm plastic spring.
The other end of the spring has a little hook that I attach to my belt.
Then I'm always 'connected' with the keys, and I cannot forget them. Very simple, cheap and also elegant! - You can use an old fashion chain or a wire if you want to.
I hope this very low tech solution may help.

Re: My worst fear

With the spring key holder and some effort, you can still lock the key under the seat. But, then you do not have to worry about losing the scooter, because you will be chained to it! (grin)

Re: My worst fear

Not exactly!
In order to do so, I'd rather need to jump into the back set trunk.
That's why the spring is short enough. In addition, the seat cannot be locked due to the spring diameter, but I guess that someone else with enough imagination, crativity anad also patience, will succeed forgeting the keys in any place.
Cheers! :)

Re: My worst fear

I've thought of this myself, though its not my worst fear. I'm just very careful to not put the key there. There's really no good reason to have the key anywhere other than in the ignition or my pocket. They gave me two keys when I got the bike. I keep the second key at home. I guess if I ever lost or did lock the key under the seat I guess I'd have to find a way back home to get the spare.
It would also be possible to lock the keys in the glove box. I think I could probably pop (ie force) that open, but I'd hate to mess it up just to get the key back.
So when closing either the rear seat or the glove box, I sometimes check to see where the key is before closing it. :)

Spare keys? - I got a bit twitched having only one key (The guy I bought my Vectrix from said he'd forward the 2nd key, but he has stopped reponding to my emails :( )
So today I thought I'd get two spares cut from the one key I do have.

The blank the Locksmith used was a Silca ZD24RDP. I got 2 cut today (@ £12 the pair) by:

Express Key & Lock Services

(01689) 850008

...but any locksmith that can cut motorcycle keys (it is a fairly common key, as the ignition is ZADI, used on a range of bikes) and that has some ZD24RDP blanks - can run you up some spares.
