Replacement batteries for EVT 168?

Hi All

First thing to say as that I'm a noob when it comes to EVs...watts, volts and amps all the same to me!

I have the opportunity to buy an EVT168 but the battery has died. So I'm wondering if it's finacially viable to buy the bike and purchase batteries separately.
Apparently the EVTs take 48v 50ah batteries however, I can't seem to find any on the net. I've read a fair amount of info regarding Lifepo4 batteries and they seem to be the best in terms of bang for buck although I'm not entirely sure.

So the questions are:

What type of battery do I need?
How many considering room under the seat of the EVT?
Where to buy them from (based in Paris but English, so can fetch from UK)?
What happens if I buy four 12v 40ah batteries? Will I lose performance due to 40ah instead of 50ah?
Do Lifepo4 increase speed or just range?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I believe the EVT 168 uses four, 12-volt, 50amp-hour sealed lead acid batteries of a standard dimension - mounted in a vertical arrangement under the seat. Measure the length width and height of one of the old battery and note whether the terminals are tab or a threaded insert type. Do a search of "12 volt 50AH SLA bettery"

A good quality replacement would be the BB Battery EB50-12.

How many considering room under the seat of the EVT?

The battery compartment should hold four batteries.

Where to buy them from (based in Paris but English, so can fetch from UK)?

You can check the internet for EU-based battery dealers, or a retail store if you can find one. Try a business that deals in computer equipment (uninterruptable power supplies) or emergency power-failure lights.

You will lose about 20% of your riding range per charge, but no change in speed or acceleration. Or the range may be similar because the capacity at the higher amperage the scooter uses may actually be nearly the same as a 50AH. The AH rating is just the amount of total energy the battery can store. The acceleration and top speed are controlled by the scooters controller and motor. The 40AH batteries might be physically smaller. If they are, you need to rig spacers or such, so they don't rattle around in the battery compartment.

Do Lifepo4 increase speed or just range?

The LiFePO4's would just increase range. The LiFePO4 pack may be rated at 40 or 60AH but has almost twice the usable energy because you actually only get 40 AH out of a 40AH lead-acid battery if it is discharged very slowly. The top speed is controlled by the controller. The acceleration and hill climbing would improve because the LiFePO4 cells would make the scooter lighter. There are 12-volt LiFePO4's batteries that could be drop-in replacement's (look up "Valence U=charge") but they have never been available to the general public. So we use sixteen 3-volt cells by the Chinese Manufacturer "Thundersky" to obtain a 48 volt pack. It is a lot of work converting to LiFePO4's - you need to find cells of a size that will physically fit in the old battery space, and you need a battery management unit - ones suitable for our purposes being in the form of do-it-yourself electronic kits.

Thanks PJD!

Is this (top one) the battery you purchased? http://www.thunder-sky.com/products_en.asp?fid=66&fid2=68

They don't seem to have a price...anyone know how much these things cost? And will the installation be difficult for a person of limited experience?

Cheers
