Re: Right-Side Lists, Improve?

Have you not seen the others who screamed when they were removed from the pages they're gone from? Clearly there are differing opinions of the value of the sidebar.

Yes if your screen is small enough the Recent Posts page can have content covered by the sidebar. However I checked and I had to resize the browser smaller than 800x600 for the Recent Posts to be covered. How is it you still have a screen that small? Do you have any idea how rare that is? I suppose I should try to be a little more understanding here. Oh you poor man to have a screen so small ;-) ... Seriously, what size screen are you talking about? Am I misunderstanding something?

Re: Right-Side Lists, Improve?

Most, many, all ???? netbooks (about 8.5 inch screen, like the Acer) have 800 width. I assume the Wii has the same, even though the Opera Browser there has a larger virtual screen.

The observation is, on the lists under Recent Posts (Bicycles, etc.) the lists are constructed to allow room for the right-side lists, but the Recent Posts list is not, and the right-side lists overlay useful stuff.

I do not see any complaints about how the bicycles list is handled.

Maybe many complaints came from those who did (do) not realize that the Recent Posts list is available. It is still not "obvious" that this VERY HELPFUL list exists.

It is possible to program the html so that the right-side lists are to the right of the main displays, not "fixed" at the right edge of the screen and possibly overlaying main content. Or, have the main content overlay the side lists.

Perhaps just re-size the Recent Posts to match the other lists.
Or, better, eliminate the right-side lists from the one place that they are really redundant, on the Recent Posts page.

But, as you wish, I am only offering well-experienced feedback to help improve your forum.

The www.ApteraForum.com recently moved to a faster server, and they now take about 1 sec. to "save" a new post. But, they use very popular, much different (maybe free?) software.

Re: Right-Side Lists, Improve?

Um, the netbooks I found on amazon.com just now have 1024x600 screens that includes the ones with 8.5" screens. Maybe you're thinking of an earlier generation of those things.

Good point tho' that portable things have smaller screens still. For example the iPhone has a 480x320 screen.

The Wii is gonna be limited by whatever screen it's on. Old TV's were 640x480 or some similar size but newfangled ones have more pixels that maybe the Wii can take advantage of.

As for the different Recent pages, you may notice they all have the same columns (to the best of my attention to detail to make it so). Also there's no explicit width set in the stylesheets for the views which generate those pages. That means the width of the Recent tables is based on what's in the tables. I noticed some of the forum names have long words in them (e.g. "Suggestions" or "VisForVoltage") and renamed one of the forums to have shorter words (e.g. "tips" and "V is for Voltage"). This changed the width of the Recent table on that page.

I've looked at the columns on those tables to think which could be displayed together. An important (?maybe?) feature of the tables is clicking on the table header to re-sort the table in different ways. I could also add boxes to allow for searching like I did with the User List [1] the other day. Anyway to be able to sort the table on a given value, it needs to be in its own column. On the other hand putting two values into one column helps the table shrink a bit by having fewer columns.

Do you see a column which doesn't need to be there? Or two columns that could be put together?

The Recent boxes are a bit redundant on the Recent pages, and they're helpful on the Forum or Post pages. Further both the Forum and Post pages are better behaved (now) when resized to a small size. Except for posts with wide pictures.

ApteraForum uses vBulletin .. which is explicitly not free software (unlike Drupal). vBulletin doesn't have the wide range of features Drupal has, so far as I know it only does forums.

Re: Right-Side Lists, Improve?

I swapped them around.. let me know if this is any better. The 'Active Forum Posts' list can be much longer (so I noticed) at the moment it's 13 but if you think it should be even longer that's easy enough.

The Active Forum list is longer, so probably better for those who use it.

The list is no longer on Recent Posts or Bicycles.

Re: Right-Side Lists, Improve?

Why is the Active Forum list now below a bunch of commercial (and otherwise) ramblings? This site is hard enough to navigate with its glacial page loading, but now it's harder to even find where you *want* to go. And for some reason I'm often getting a different 'first' page when I log in. Different is only better when it's actually better...
