48v SLA convert to 48v.. ish... non sla questions (noob)

Hi guys (and gals?), I am new to the forum, electronics, and E-biking so forgive my noobieness … (you have been warned)
I have a no name motor and controller (from Ebay) that came with 4 12v SLA’s, but they have bent my rear rim so bad that I can no longer use my rear brakes. The box the kit came in reads 48v 500watt. I have read posts on this forum of people converting from 4 SLA’s to … non… SLA’s. Does anything special need to be done for this? Can one simply take something like 2 24v nimh packs apart and make 1 48 volt battery? or heck with taking the pack apart, leave it alone and run the 2 24v’s as they are if possible. If it is doable, could I just connect the positive and negative ends to the batteries and cap off or cut the left over positive and negative cables? Or must each one be supplied with 12 volts?
( I know so little it’s embarrassing )

There is no particular problem with using other chemistires as long as the voltage is the same.

Depending on what your needs are, the easiest thing to do is go to ebikes.ca and order a nicad pack in 48v. Also the charger to go with it.
It's a good set up for the wattage you are using, and the nicads are very proven technology that is pretty noob proof. Your speed and range will be about the same as with the sla's, but the weight will be less, and the lifepspan a LOT longer, 500-1000 cycles instead of sla's 250. ebikes.ca has the best tech support in the world, so they can help you with making the connections to the new battery if needed. That would be a good solution for a noob. I have some nicads, and they are great for occasional riding since you can store em however you like, and don't need to charge right away like with lead.

If you need more range, then there are good lifepo4 sellers out there, notably pingbattery.com. You could get a 15 ah 48v pack, and have about 20 miles of range full throttle.

There are about a zillion other options, but just a couple 24v drill batteries won't do it if that is what you are meaning. To run a bike well takes more than just two. It can work, but when I did it with 24v black and decker drill batteries, I got about a mile out of two of em.

Since you are just learning about ebikes, the best bet is to get a pack that is 48v, rather than try to shave a few bucks connecting smaller stuff.

Be the pack leader.

Do you have the NiMH packs now?

The way you'd get 48v with 2x 24v packs is to connect the + of one pack to the - of the other. Then the + and - which are still unconnected will read 48v.

Battery math: Batteries connected in series add together voltage. Batteries connected in parallel add together amp-hours.
