I have a question can I run a 72v controller instead of a 48 volt controller.I have a 60v mod running on a 48v controller right now.I know you can run more watts but not sure about more volts.any help or input will be appreciated.At 72 volts I need to wire the 48v battery pack directly to the dc converter.I'm gonna stay at 60v for a little bit until I find some good 20ah batteries then upgrade to 72 volts.Here are the specs for my bike.I have been running 60v for about 200 km with no problems.So I guess my basic question is can I run this controller
on my stock bike?

If Both controllers ratings are accurate, this should work ok.
The only possible problem is if the 72v controller LV disconnect is not adjustable.
In which case you will need a 72v battery pack to run the controller.

Do I have to worry about the 3
phase or 5 hall wires or will they match up right?
Don't want anything to go boom :(
the 3-phases will be either 60 or 120 degrees apart.
most controllers either automatically detect which, or can switch between the two.
you will need to match up the 5 hall wires:
red = 5v
black = gnd
yellow, blue and green are the hall sensor outputs.

Trial and error? aside from red and black if the other 3 are hooked up wrong will there be a problem?Only asking because I understand that there is no standard in china yet for how the wires are coded.

When connecting a 3 phase motor, if it turns backwards, switch any TWO of the wires, and normal rotation (Forwards) should result.--Bob

Instead of buying a dc dc converter can I just wire up like this?I think 48 v will go to the dc dc and I can add battries down the line for 72 v while the dc dc gets only 48 and the controller gets 72 is this right?

it does look like thats how this works.
certainly thats how i wired up my emax.
however, it will pull your battery pack out of balance.
If you are using a string charger, dont do it.
If you are charging the 48v section seperately to the 24v section, it will work (though the 48v section will still see more wear).

If I use a 72 volt charger and rotate the batteries every week or 2 will this help keep the batteries in balance .Controller arrives tomorrow :).
Do you really want to disconnect and re-connect 12 nut-and-bolt battery terminals every week?
My suggestion is to just bite the bullet and get a good dc-dc converter that will handle whatever pack voltage you have now (60V?) and can take 72V or maybe even 84V. Then you will be discharging and recharging the entire pack more evenly.
I'd think about checking each battery individually from time to time with a voltmeter to look for imbalances. Charging each battery separately with a 12V automotive charger may restore a closer balance between batteries. No need to disconnect any battery terminals to check voltages or to charge with a 12V charger.

Any suggestions for a dc dc ?Kelly looks kinda expensive (I,m cheap).Will be wiring in my controller later, how do you get the voltage meter on dash to adjust to reading from 48v to 72?
I'm not sure you will find a good 72V to 12V converter for much less than Kelly. They have one for $129.
Another option is to add a separate 12V battery just for the "accessories" that are now being powered by your 48V to 12V converter. You would not need a converter at all that way. But would need to size the Ah of the separate battery to match the power demand for the time that you need. Also would need to keep this battery charged separately with a good 12V charger.
There's no adjustment needed on your voltmeter. It is designed to measure within a certain range, such as 0VDC to 100VDC. If your in-dash voltmeter is capable of measuring only up to 60VDC for instance, hooking it up to 72VDC will peg the needle.
problem hooked up new controller I have power in. throttle working reads red wire 5 v.Green wire 1 to 4.5 v depending how much I twist.But how do i check voltage reading for thick phase wires and thin hall wire?
with 5 applied to the thin black (-) and red (+) cables,
use a voltmeter to measure the voltage between the thin black wire, and one of the thin signal wires.
as you turn the wheel (slowly) the measured voltage should change between 0.5v and 4.5v, or there abouts.
If the voltage on any of the signal wires dont do this, then the hall sensors are at fault.
