throttle troubleshooting help

Posted this on the small scooter section but might be applicable here too...

My scooter is a "boreem" type....freedom 959. Today, as I was riding I let off the throttle and was coasting and when I went back on the throttle there was little to no power...barely running the motor...and even when I don't turn the throttle there is some power to the motor.

I'm suspecting either the throttle has gone bad...or a controller problem...or a short in one of the wires from the throttle to the controller. Can someone tell me how to check/test the throttle to see if it is working properly? The throttle apparently has 3 small wires...green, black and brown coming from it to the plug that plugs into the female side going to the controller. There's also a blue wire going into that plug...but it comes from a separate set of wires and I suspect it is either something to do with the speedo or batt meter. How do these throttles work? Can somebody give me some help here...troubleshooting advice, etc.??? I'd really appreciate it. Reply here or private message either one.

Thanks in advance for any help!

The Freedom 959 is 700 Watts correct?
I'm sure someone will be along to answer your question real soon. There are some wiring diagrams in our EV DownLoad Library that may help or give some clues. Good luck.

Re: throttle troubleshooting help

Well, no it was supposed to be 900 watts...and it probably is...good power. They were advertising it as 959...and then said it was actually 987 or something like that..newer version with higher watts...and that was www.gokartsrus.com...who no longer sells these scooters. I just need to be able to test the throttle to find out if that's the problem...and if not...then I'm sure it's going to be the controller. BTW for anyone seeing this--where online is the biggest supplier of parts for these type scoots?

Thanks,
Gushar

Re: throttle troubleshooting help

The original 959 were 900-watts. I have one but I do not use it as is, I gutted it for parts to use on my EZ-3 trike. The one item I have left which was not used is the controller. If your controller is the problem or if you would like to buy it make me an offer at chas_stevenson [at] yahoo.com and I would be happy to send it your way. I can accept PayPal as a payment option.

I am not a dealer I just happen to have a part you might be able to use.

Do you have any kind of test meter? You'll need one before you can do any troubleshooting.

Re: throttle troubleshooting help

Yes, Chas I'd be interested in that controller....just to have a spare. Mine is #660B8 according to the label on the side. Is that what yours is? Do you have a price in mind or want me to make an offer. Course might not be worthwhile for either of us since I see it listed on partsforscooters.com at $47.95...not really expensive. But, they list that part number controller for 750W application...Don't really understand that if the motor truly is 900 watts. Did you gut this scooter without using it...or is there hours on it...the controller, etc.? If it doesn't really have any time on it let me know and I might just make you a reasonable offer to have a spare. I should be getting my xtreme xb600 any day but I want to keep the 959 (or 900 watt supposed to be 957/958) in good running shape.

And Gman I do have a couple of meters to test the throttle. I'm ordering a new throttle today regardless but I'd still like to know how to test it...for future reference. The parts site I mentioned above has a troubleshooting guide...but indicates you have to send something like 6.4 volts to the throttle to check it and I don't have a power supply to do that. Just wondering if there's any other way I can test it?

Thanks you guys for helping out here. I continue to not only get help here when I need it...but learn an awful lot from those of you who are more knowledgeable about scoot mechanics!

Re: throttle troubleshooting help

Whoops...that's not partsforscooters.com where I found the parts...but electricscooterparts.com. Not trying to plug any companies here but don't want to send somebody who might need similar parts to the wrong site. The latter is the only place I found the 959 (957/958) parts. By the way anybody know of another online retailer that carries these parts?

Re: throttle troubleshooting help

You can use the power from the controller to test the throttle (throttle connected).

Put the negative probe of the meter on the battey negative.

Use the positive probe of the meter to measure the throttle wires one by one.
Sometimes it's necessary to use a skinny piece of wire to insert into the back side of the connector since the meter probes may be too fat to fit.

I don't know the color code for your particular throttle, but all have 3 wires.
One wire is ground and should measure near zero volts for any throttle position (this actually sounds like what might have broken)

One wire is the voltage supply for the throttle and should be a steady 5v or so.

The third wire is the throttle signal. It should go from about 1v to 4v as the throttle is increased.

Actual voltages may vary depending on controller model.

Since the motor is creeping, put the wheel off the ground when testing.
