I'm thinking of converting one of my older kryton lights to 12v LED, and then running a 12v light system off one of my 12v batteries.
Has anyone had any experience doing this and can recommend a particular LED?
Guess I'm considering a Luxeon or similar, or even a 12v car globe, that may fit inside my original housing. (its am older Cateye, EL 400, I think)
Also thinking of a permanently mounted 12v LED rear light as well.

I've recently been looking for something similar and found an interesting solution here: http://www.instructables.com/id/EETR2RMF0X27XTM/
I've been playing around with a few sample Luxeons this week, and they're certainly as bright as advertised! Can't compare them to the competition, though.
Not sure about the best/cheapest way to get from 36/48/72v down to 12, either...
Several of the members are using the Lucent JW030-Power Module to get to 12-volts. The wiring digram for this module may be found on our EV DownLoad Library.

Welcome to our V is for Voltage Community, I'm also looking for some better lighting. In my case I need to make sure my system will handle it. Since I also have a Alarm system I want to install, another hooter (Horn) I'm was seriously looking at something like what Chas is talking about..
I was planning to run the Alarm off a separate very small 12 Volt hidden battery, but a system like the one you found looks very interesting. Thanks for the tip, I'll look into it.

I studied quite a few places, overall I think that the MR-16's are more efficient than led's.
I am using 24 volt MR-16's at 20 watts each, 2 on the front are more than enough light to drive by at 25 mph.
12 volt MR-16's are available just about anyplace that sells light bulbs,
