with or without a controller

Is there way to tell if a brushless motor has an internal controller?

Re: with or without a controller

Easiest way is by the number of wires in the connections. If there is a battery positive and negative, and a throttle connection (typically 3-pin), and maybe a brake inhibit connection (2-pin), it has an internal controller.

If the brushless motor used an external controller, you would have 6 wires between the motor and controller, and the throttle cable would connect directly to the controller.

Re: with or without a controller

Thanks for the help, looks like this one has an internal controller. I have applied 24v to the power wires Black/red and noticed that the shaft seems stiff ( in the sense its harder to turn) is this normal? then when power is removed it will spin freely after a couple of seconds.
i have connected 2 different types of throttles one was just a 5k pot (nothing happened) and I think a hall throttle (3wires) but again nothing happening..any suggestions?
