Current Motor Co., a Scio Township-based startup that's developing electric motorcycles, won the Great Lakes Entrepreneur's Quest's "emerging companies" mid-year competition. The $5,000 award, announced Thursday night at the Annual Collaboration for Entrepreneurship event at Ann Arbor's Skyline High School, is a recognition of the company's technology and business strategy.
Peter Scott, chief operating officer of Current Motor, said the firm expects to deliver its first electric motorcycle next week. He said the company is aiming to produce 150 bikes this year and raise $2 million in capital in 2011.
The company's electric motorcycles can travel 80 miles on a single charge of electricity. Prices start at $5,500.
"Our bike requires little maintenance, no gas and (has) zero emissions," Scott said....
Seems to me I've heard of this company somewhere....
Congrats John!
I'm sure everyone here is looking forward to seeing that first bike shipped next week. ;)
But how did you let that 80-mile range number get quoted? Especially given our range conversation in another recent thread.
My electric vehicle: CuMoCo C130 scooter.
Congratulations!
What's a chief operating officer?
Is that the one who's job it is to ignore the engineers better advice and make inflated claims?

John, Is that the econamey $5,500 Madal? or is that the deluxe, with 30x 60ah 5.7KW at maybe 30-35Mph (what speed?) that costs less than $8,000 ?? LaTeR

Yup - I wonder who we're going to ship it to?
Ack, I know, I know! But bear in mind that we have to compete in a world where most folks quote marketing miles. The mighty Vectrix has a 3.3kWh and they regularly quote a 60 mile range. Zero and Brammo both quote "optimistic" figures. Our 5.75kWh pack is one of the largest packs out there and can give an 80 mile range at 30mph. That is at least a little better than the conversation on the other thread.
I agree though. I like to quote both numbers (80 marketing miles or 50 real world miles) - but everyone tells me that confuses folks.

Ouch! Which over-inflated claim do you refer to? ;-)
Actually, Peter started as COO but is now president. There was a bloodless coup and they deposed the previous joker who held that position. Oh, that would be me! Actually, we made Peter president because he has far more business experience than me (and it was a mutually agreed decision). I'm still fully involved though.
Tell you what though - if you can persuade all the other EV motorcycle makers to stick to a standard way to define range (such as an urban drive-cycle) CuMoCo will happily comply.

$5,500 = C120e = 20 x 40 Ah
$6,000 = C120 = 20 x 60 Ah
$6,500 = C124 = 24 x 60 Ah
$7,500 = C130 = 30 x 60 Ah
The 80 mile range is the C130 at 30mph.

And finally...
Thanks to all for the congrats. 2010 is going to be a break out year for Current Motor Company. Good things are happening in Ann Arbor, Michigan!
All the best - and many happy EV miles to you all be they at 30mph or 130mph...

It would be very useful if a standard EV 'performance/ consumption measurement' was mandated. This would provide a great benefit to not only the consumer, but to the manufacturer. The publication of an standard measurement could be required as trade descriptive , pre-condition to sale and registration (road worthy) authorisation.
Such a standard would assist quality EV makers, and bring some genuine confidence to the marketplace. Product failing to meet this regulation would simply not be able to attain registration, or sales.

So, how do we make it happen?
