Cost becomming aproblem my gas bike kit onlt cost $135.00

My new pedaless design is setup for a crystalyte hub motor cruiser and it looks to be $900.00 plus ouch.
Any Ideas? I want to design and build this realy cool electric project which I designed from scratch. I am currently in the pre welding stage of this ground up design.I have worked in an engineering office as a design draftsmen slash supervisor and feel very confident that my design will work very well. But lack of funds may kill this project. Anybody else feeling this way?
Hard to believe that a gas bike cost about $400.00 to hit the street and a Electric bike that can keep up with it will run you over a $1000.00 easily. Give me some Ides any cheaper 40 volt hub motors out there?

Hey Badger,

I don't mean to discourage you.

I guess you'll just have to be patient I guess..

In about 20 years or so, batteries and motors might be mass products and very evolved and cheap.

But I guess your project wouldn't be that cool 20 years from now...

bummer..

There are also other factors.... an electric bike is NOT a motor vehicle, thus requiring no tag, title, license, insurance. A gas powered bike IS a motor vehicle, thus requiring most if not all of the above. Other factors include noise and exhaust pollution especially since I bet the gas engine is 2 stroke. ( I hope I have the 2 and 4 strokes correct.... 2 stroke requires a gas/oil mixture does it not?) True the ability to stop at a gas station and quickly refuel is nice and that is not possible with electric.

Yes perhaps in the future there will be high voltage charging stations in gas stations, and hopefully the battery technology improves to provide low cost, high performance batteries. Of course you could cut the cost almost in half using SLA instead of Lithium batteries, but that also doubles the weight as well.

It all boils down to WHY you are making this bike...... Are you looking for a low cost mode of transportation for use without the factor of noise and CO2 pollution? Or was that a primary reason?

I am forging foward on the Electric moped it will be very awesome when done. I like the zero emissions concept. I am concerened with the radiaton output on E-bikes as an ex nuke plant worker I am almost positive that motors put out radiation. Are there any studies out on this?

Also yes my gas bike kit is a EPA approved 2-stroke. Considered a gross polluter. I dissagree since the EPA measures the air pollution output at the tailpipe. 2 Stroke engines do not vaporize the oil therefor common sense tells me rhat the oil only floats maybe a few feet before falling back to the earth it came from. Only the gasoline vapors go into the air and at 170 miles per gallon it is very little compared to my aoutomobile which gets about 20 MPG.
Any experts on this subject out there?

If you are going to build something, take a look at the Diggler! If I could afford one or fabricate!!!!! It looks like it would WORK!

As an ex-nuke plant worker I'd expect you to know enough about radiation to know that electric motors do not produce any (well, not that sort; they do produce electromagnetic radiation but that's very different).

Radiation

No electric motors do not have Nuclear fission or Gamma rays but they do have radiation. I know they have done studies on radiation from electric motors in the 1970's. I am not sure on the results however.
