EVT 4000E Needs more speed :)

Hi All!

I have an EVT4000e which i like a lot, but don't use much because it's so slow. It's subject
to EU regulations, and top speed is limited to 45km/h.

I think the controller is limited to 80% duty cycle, and wonder if someone know if unsrestricted
original controllers is on the market at all?

It seems the charger charges each battery individually, so I would like to stick with the original
48V system, and plan B is to simply bypass the controller using relays when the throttle passes
95% and Power mode is selected? Any thoughts on this :)

Ah... the need for speed.

Take a look at: EVT 60 volt mod

One of the methods is to eschew EVT's controller entirely and get a 60 or 72 volt controller with 60 or 72 volt battery pack. It's been shown that EVT's motor can handle 72 volts. However if you have the brushed version there will be an issue of brushes burning out more quickly, and I don't know of a source for replacement brushes.

My EVT 4000 has a turbo switch (a special one-time deal done by electric motorsport) that switches the bike from 48 volt to 60 volt mode. At 60 volts the bike gets a second wind but only gets to 38-40 miles/hr speed.

At the end of the day the EVT 4000 motor is only rated for 1500 watts. Nowadays there are other scooters available with higher powered motors. If you really want more speed maybe you should look for them?

Reikiman is right, but his 60V mod advice is only valid for the pre-2009 EVT's. From 2009 on the scooter has a brushless motor (BLM). This type will not run when the motor is directly switched to the battery, since you need the controller to convert the power into a rotating pattern. I've found no information yet of 60V used on a brushless motor and controller.

Re: EVT 4000E Needs more speed :)

Thanks for the tips :) but as I mentioned in my initial post I would like to stick with the 48 system,
and try to get an unrestricted controller instead of almost rebuilding the entire thing.

I have found one in Canada at $398 + shipping. It seems that mopeds are limited to <= 70km/h
in B.C, Ontario and Quebec, and EVT Canada says this controller is good for 60km/h.

In the EU and parts of the US the speed is limited to 45km/h to register as a moped, so I guess
this means the Canadian EVT 4000e controllers are unrestricted? Any Canadians here that can
confirm this?

Re: EVT 4000E Needs more speed :)

Hi Zunzhine,

I also look for more speed. I own a new 2010 model EVT 168, with brushless motor & controller.
When you look at the specs on the website of EVT Taiwan, you see that the controller can be limited to 25, 45 or 55 km/h.
I also live in Europe, so I have a 45 km/h controller on my scooter as well. Indeed, it runs 45.5 km/h on the GPS, but the speedo shows a speed of 52 km/h.
It would be wise to check wether the Canadian version of the controller shows 60 km/h on the speedo but in fact gives you just 55 km real km's an hour. 400$ or 300 euro is quite expensive for just 10 km/h !
Other threads in this forum suggest that the right way to get more speed is to purchase an universal, programmable controller (kelly, alltrax). These controllers provide full control of your controller, so you are free to choose the speed/distance ratio you like. However, the EVT has a conventional, cable operated throttle, so some modifications on this part will be required.

Hi Peter3L,

55km/h would actually be ok, but I'll check with them and report back here. I owned a gas scoot a while
back with a four valve, watercooled 50ccm injection engine that did exactly 44km/h at top speed :-(
It was difficult to modify the engine/ECU, but I managed to squeese 55km/h out of it by fitting an aftermarket
variator instead, and was quite pleased with the result.

About Alltrax controllers, I'm not shure why that is a better solution. Given that the 'Canadian' controller operates
at close to 100% duty cycle, the speed is limited by the motor power at 48 volts, I think.?

Another problem I have with going for another controller make is that I would like to keep the battery gauge and
stuff as is, so I will probably spend the $400 + shipping this time, and hope it will do the trick.

Re: EVT 4000E Needs more speed :)

Just received an answer, they say the speed is about 57km/h by GPS.

Re: EVT 4000E Needs more speed :)

The maximum speed is related to the amount of power the motor can produce. Since this power is a function of the voltage and the current (P = V * A), you can improve speed by increasing the voltage or current or both. On the brushed version of the scooter a higher voltage is the easiest: you only need an extra battery. Changing the current can be more difficult, because you need a higher controller capacity, thicker wires and so on. The universal controllers have user-adjustable voltage and currents, so in that case the choice is yours.
The brushed version of the EVT scooter is known to run well on 60V. At 48V the motor produces 1500W, so at 60V it is good for 1875W. In terms of speed this is equivalent to 45-55km/h at 48V to 55-65km/h at 60V (depending on the terrain, slope, wind, weight of the battery pack and driver)
The later brushless version of the scooter can make 2800W at 48V, so speeds of 65km/h should be no problem for this motor if the controller is unrestricted and capable to deliver the required current.

However, I am very curious about your Canadian andventure. Please keep me informed.
By the way: do you have a brushed or brushless motor, and in which country do you live ?

I'll keep you informed :) The motor is brushed, and i live in Norway. This Canadian company
sells unrestricted controllers for brushless motors too.

Got this msg from PayPal today, the controller is on its way :)

Du har nettopp sendt en betaling til Ecodrive Technology Group Inc for $542,85 USD

BTW, this is a nice EVT 4000e vid from BC Canada: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVrEkk7lFV4

Re: EVT 4000E Needs more speed :)

The new 55km/h Controller from evtcanada arrived a few days ago. It took 20 minutes to fit it, and it worked very well. The bike is faster and much more useful now, so this was a sucess. Here's my first test-ride:

Re: EVT 4000E Needs more speed :)

Congratulations !

Did you allready test the scooter with a GPS ? My scooter hits 52 km/h on the speedo, corresponding with 45.5 km/h on the GPS. Since my country is as flat as a pancake I don't have the advantage of downhill roads ... but may be you can test on a flat surface as well.

Re: EVT 4000E Needs more speed :)

Thanks! I haven't tested with GPS yet, but it hits about 66km/h on the speedo on level roads compared to slightly
over 50km/h with the old controller. I weigh 96kg. The speedometer is obviously 'a bit' optimistic, so I'll check with a GPS soon.
