Currie Eaip Battery Connector Problsm

I have two Currie Trailz bikes. Both have the same problem One side of the battery connector, (near the hub on each side), have melted.

I not talking by much but rather where they shifted shape and then would no longer move up and down.

I called Currie and they said they would replace them ($55) but that the unit aka, the materials were the same.

Short of major surgery you have to use the connectors.

Let me know if anyone else has had this problem If not, then I guess I am just unlucky.

Re: Currie Eaip Battery Connector Problsm

I have a Currie Ezip Trailz 2009 model. I have had only a minor problem with the wire as it enters the connector block breaking the ring terminal off of the wire. The screw was a little large for the center of the terminal, and easily fatigued over time. I replaced the ring terminal, and added a washer to reinforce it. The process of melting usually indicated high current flow through either resistive surface contact, or too small a wire. Either is possible with this setup. After replacing the battery connectors, I would recommend regular cleaning of the terminals on the battery bottom, and on the mating connector with alcohol wipes (tissue or paper towels and rubbing alcohol will do) or a pro de-oxidizing contact cleaner... and possibly replacing the battery wires with thicker gauge wire. A loose connection, such as the screw on the ring terminal on the bottom of the battery connector will also cause a heated connection. The design isnt the best, but it is very serviceable.

thanks for the reply.

I will try what you suggest.

The concern I had was the flawed design which could result in the melting of the terminals. If the wire is too small that means that they designer didn't design right. If the bolt is too long, too short or just too too, same problem. Similarly with the material itself that holds the pins. It should be of material designed to handle the maximum current that could flow. I have no idea when this occurred, I just was shocked to see that it happened on two bikes on the same side of the bike.

What really galled me was that when I pointed this out, melting parts, clearly a defect in design and/or workmanship, Currie was more happy to send me the new parts at a cost of $55 or so. When I asked about the problem it was clear from the technicians response that this was not a new point. I asked about design or material changes to avoid the problem and I was told that the material and design is the same.

Alas. Hopefully no one gets hurt.

I'd also check to see if the parts are covered under warranty by any chance. $55? I hope that is for two with overnight shipping...

yes, it is alarming that they can melt down like that, and you are not the first. As to the danger, the battery cartridge itself is fuse protected, and should blow out before any serious fire or explosive occurance happen. The cartridge housing should prevent any danger to the rider should the fuse fail to prevent a mess. The fuse is located on the inner side of the battery, at the bottom, a small screw-out cap holds it in place. This cap can also work loose on occasions.
