Does anyone know where I can get fenders for a schwinn electric scooter? I have a schwinn FX.

FX? Are you sure this is a Schwinn? Others call them that. There's a Schwinn Missle FS. Note from the picture there are no fenders. I have a different Schwinn, and there are holes on the fork that could be used to mount a fender.

If you want to make one, there's two ways: One requires a piece of aluminum from the hardware store or ??, of a thick enough variety that it will maintain shape after you bend it. I'd say 9 inches to a foot long is a good length for such a fender on your average little scooter, you'll mount it 3 inches from the front tip and the rest will curl down the back. You'll have to measure between the forks for what would fit between. If you've heard of 'Rolling metal' that's what you'll be doing. I recommend a flat across fender that curves to follow the wheel. As for what you might have around the house to improvise with, well, I really don't know what you're handy with. You'll need to drill a hole and make a tab to screw to the forks with holes in it,

The other way sounds more complcated, but I think it's easier. If you can get a piece of NONCORROGATED cardboard, cardstock or whatever, at least the 9 inches long and the one or two inches wide you need, this mades for a cheap way, but some people might get messy with it. This is so easy for me to stand in front of you and do, but the explanation sounds difficult. You need that hole for mounting before you epoxy it, as drilling will be difficult. You can use something like the peel off part of such tape that has it, I've met to experiment with blue masking tape.frog tape and the like to see if epoxy won't stick to the back but I haven't gotten to it. I've had luck with the peeling away off the side of a plastic bucket, but that might just be the bucket that I have. The idea is, you radius your cardboard fender on maybe a bucket slightly larger than your wheel, (Taped to the bucket) or something else round, or when I started doing this I used fast hardening epoxy and just held at the clean ends a few minutes until it wouldn't bend anymore. You only put the THIN COAT of epoxy on one side to start, and when that's hard you get the other side. I highly recommend nitrile gloves. Or latex. There's antistick you can get, but I'm sure you won't go running to find it around you, so this is how I did these things before I knew the right way. If your careful you can avoid problems.

You'll make your tab for mounting the same way, but you want to attach it the first time you epoxy the side because epoxy isn't so happy to just go sticking to itself. Make your holes before and keep the epoxy clear of it; it's a pain to drill epoxy once it's hard.

If you're not so ambitious, (I rather like just making my own if it doesn't need to be original) there's other scooters with fenders the right size, the Razor FX comes to mind. If you like the look of that fender, there you go. You might still have mounting trouble.

My youtube videos show how to make a fender from scratch using several different metal shaping techniques. There are a lot of videos on the channel so search for Tuck Shrinking parts 1 and 2: http://tinyurl.com/custom-metal

That's some cool how to's, but can we get people to go to the trouble of watching them? Not sure how serious anyone is about fabrication. I just wanted to give people an idea of slapping something simple together, but if you can get some of them started doing it the way the big boys do, that's great. Harbor Freight has french wheels.
