Off road hill climbing and On road high speed.

I do a lot of riding around town, and without assistance, I can get my 27 speed mountain bike up to 32mph, but I get tired fast at that speed, though I can keep up with most city traffic for short distances. My city has no bike lanes, and few sidewalks, and even where there are sidewals, it doesn't allow bikes on sidewalks, so if you can't keep up with the cars, you're asking to get run over by the rednecks around here.

I think a Bionx 500 would be good to help me with that.

However, I also ride frequently on muddy logging roads and when climbing slopes or taking corners, I find my rear drive wheel slipping and spinning out in the mud as it tries to push the front wheel over bumps and through thick mud. For that, I think an EZEE front wheel drive kit would be good to provide front end power while I pedal the back wheel.

What I would like to do, is do both. I notice that both kits use a 36.9V 10AH battery and brushless hub motors.

I think that if I buy a Bionx 500 complete kit, and just the front wheel and motor of an EZEE kit and install the two motors on a selector switch, I can use the front wheel assist and just the pedals in the rear when off roading, and switch to rear wheel assist for in town. If both the EZEE and the Bionx can be managed with the same controller and battery, I would just need the selector switch (easy to get from any auto parts store) to select front or rear wheel assist.

My questions are:
1. "Is there any reason this setup wouldn't work?"
2. "Does the percentage of assistance selection of the Bionx work with any brushless hub motor, or is there something special about the sprocket linkage on the Bionx's rear hub motor?"
3. "Does anybody know the actual torque output of the EZEE 350Watt motor and the Bionx 500 watt motor for comparison?"
4. "Can any hub motor provide regenerative braking/charging, or is that a unique feature of the Bionx?"
5. "Does anybody know where I can get just the motor and wheel from an EZEE kit?"

That's all I can think of for now.

Sounds like you will be adding a huge amount of weight to your bike. Are you sure you want to do that?

Motors don't weigh much. Only 12 lbs. And it's at the wheels, not up high like most weight. I put way more than that in my saddle buckets every day. I've been known to haul over 200 lbs of gear on my bike. Truth is, I like Bionx's automatic % assist mostly. If I could get just the Bionx system with a front wheel motor, I'd do that. Might not be able to go as fast, but it would help at least.

hi the trouble with having 2 independent motors driving the same bike is synchronization imagine the back wheel spinning faster then the front i can foresee a lot of vibration and an un-ride-able bike.

So there's a selector switch to run only one at a time.

1. Wouldn't or shouldn't work? Once you have the front motor, it can be expected to be just fine on the city street.

4. If they sell it in California, it would be regenerative as the law requires it. Probably common in other states.

Only one motor would be used at a time. The other motor would be idle. There will be a selector switch to operate only one at a time.

I have since learned that the Bionx assist only works with a rear wheel. While I could mount just a front wheel, I wouldn't get the benefit of a torque assistance to enhance my legs on the city street, thereby limiting my range significantly. The electric 500W motor operating at full boost at 27mpg on the front hub will only last about 10 miles, if that. That same motor mounted on the rear wheel with a bionx booster at matching torque assist will last about 40miles.

You have a law requiring motors be regenerative? You seriously have an overbearing government.

Growing more overbearing all the time. New law requiring everyone buy health insurance to cover the cost of others getting it cheap, with fines for those who don't get it. A California senator laughed petulantly during an interview as she said the whole point of government is to force people to do things, prompting the LA Times to warn she doesn't have the "Intellect" to be in government. And she has since at least one the nomination for another term. So this is all the fault of people who just don't pay attention.
