building an electric board - chain problem

Hello Guys

I'm in the final stages of building / testing an electric board for my son.

We built the board from 1/8 inch maple with a lot of glue in a home made press. I bought the MBS mountain trucks/brakes and 8" wheel used on Craigslist. The thumb throttle I bought for $10 and attached to the standard MBS handbrake. The electric motor ( MY 1016 ) and controller and gear sprocket salvaged from a no name electric scooter. The battery is a used cylindrical LIFEPO I picked up on the classified area on this forum. It is 24V 30 Ah. It was big - like a concrete block. I was able to split it into 2 pieces - under all the duct tape - it sort of opened like a book. I separated the 2 halves of the "book" and then reconnected it with longer wires - so the 2 halves can sit one bedhind the other in a box under the board. The battery box I made with 1/16 inch sheet metal from a junk yard. I was able to cut out the pieces with an angle grinder and assemble it with pop rivets and a few angle brackets. The bracket to hold the motor behind the rear truck is 2 pieces of sheet metal, cut out and bolted onto the truck.

Well, everything seemed to work well on the bench, except that I noticed that wheel chain got slightly looser and tighter. Apparently when I attached the sprocket to the wheel, it was not exactly perfectly centered. Then - when I tested the board under my weight - the chain soon came off.

The sprocket is bolted to the plastic wheel with 1/4" washers used as spacers. I guess I'll need to re do that part and try and get it perfectly centered. However first I'll try and see if perhaps the alignment between the motor and the sprocket is perhaps off.

Rather than reinvent the wheel - has anyone figured out a better why to make wheel spin?
