Apparently Mars Electric just added this to their website claiming it has performance equivalent to the Agni motors.
If it does that'll only last until "next year" when Arvind told me Agni would have a new/better motor. In any case competition is a good thing.
I wonder why they went with a DC motor.
going BLDC would mean the max curent would be limited by the permanent magnets, rather than the commutator.
it would improve peak power.
oh well.......

I dunno the answer precisely - but I did meet the owner/founder/president of Mars Electric when TTXGP came to Wisconson back in June. He's a real nice guy, fun to talk with. One thing I learned is he's the designer of the Briggs & Stratton ETEK motor (left after B&S closed the ETEK project to start Mars Electric) which is also a permanent magnet brushed DC, and there are other permanent magnet brushed DC motors in their line-up.
FWIW the Agni motor he's competing against in this case is also permanent magnet brushed DC and is one of the top motors in the TTXGP.

The problem is the weight. This unit weighs 39 pounds, twice the Agni.
BUT half the price too.

This motor is 60% heavier than the Agni, and the Agni has a 40% higher continuous power rating!
Or to put it another way ...
Agni = 0.66KW per pound
Mars = 0.29KW per pound
i.e. THE AGNI IS MORE THAN TWICE AS POWERFUL. POUND FOR POUND. 2.24 times to be exact :)

well IMHO electric motor are not the limiting factor for EV right now ,
so if a motor have the same performance but cost less this can be an advantage because
I can use the saved money to get better/more battery and an overall better
performance even with an heavier motor
