This thing is sweet! I charged it for a couple hours and it only got up to 10mph or so. I was wondering if i have to charge it longer before my first test ride, and has anyone swapped out better pedals for the thing, since it was such a pain in the arse to get the threading on the pedals to fit onto where the pedals screw into.
I plugged it directly into the wall w/out the charger in the charging port on the bike and a puff of smoke came out the battery and i unplugged it real quick...that scared the hell out of me! I wouldn't have known to flip the 220/110 switch on the charger if i didn't find out about that on this site...this place is great! I hope I didn't damage the battery...after maybe 20 minutes of goofing around w/ the thing in the neighborhood i noticed the battery gauge went down a li'l...maybe i should've charged it longer the first time, but the light on the charger turned green so i figured it charged enough. I ordered a voltmeter from harbor freight online, like one guy in a forum suggested, to keep tabs on the battery. I'm gonna try hooking up the charger to the port on the scooter in a couple minutes to see if it still works. I just want to say I'm glad this site exists and I hope to learn a lot from the members here. Also...any input on the electrical wiring would be SUPER helpful since the manual gives no real detail to anything about the guts of this thing. I noticed some ppl on here did some sweet mods. Ok..I'll stfu now....

If you connected the low voltage, D.C. charge port direct to the A.C. line, instead of to the charger, it is about 99.9% CERTAIN that damage has been done,and that charging will be impossible until repairs are made!---Bob

Could you explain specifically more on this. All I understand is exactly like cell phone charger, plug the adapter into wall outlet and the other tiny end into cell phone, is this different on the bike? How it supposed to be ?
The place you plug the charger directly into the bike (front of the seat pedestal) looks exactly like a computer AC-power connector, which would normally be carrying 120V AC current, NOT SO ON E-BIKES!!!...what that place is expecting is 48-56Volts DC, so, plugging in a wall cord from a computer to that port will be disastrous! Depending on the bike, that could ruin the entire electrical system, just the controller, or the battery management system, if there is one. Smoke came from the battery? get out the butter, that thing is toast (more than likely). This is where Proper labeling of the port, as well as a PROPER owner's manual could pay off huge.
Bob, do yo have a video link or a sketch to show what is the correct way of plugging in the cord??? What is the correct device between your bike receiving connector and the AC wall outlet? I have not owned the bike yet but REALLY want to know and learn as much as possible. Like you said, I hope the owner of this thread had not toasted his bike by doing the wrong way of charging. How could that be so difficult ! I don't get it.
I suspect it was my suggestion for the voltmeter. I stand by it, but if you are at the stage of "sticking the probe in to see what happens," make sure to set the RANGE of the voltmeter ABOVE the maximum that you think might be in the line. (That's the biggest difference between a $200 Fluke and a $3.98 Harbor Freight unit: the Fluke will auto adjust for range and avoid vaporizing its innards. YOU have to do that part for the cheapie.)

They also come in two flavors: direct current (DC, like a battery) and alternating current (like in your wall socket). You need to set your meter for both strength and flavor. If I really had NO idea what was in a wire, I would start with 220V AC. If I see no voltage, I would try 220V DC.
It is the business of the charger to change the AC wall electricity to a type that will charge the batteries without melting them or causing other types of disaster. Connecting a battery pack directly to the wall, even if the connector seems to allow it, is a guaranteed disaster. The only question is how big.

To everyone that replied to this...THANKYOU! I had to build a new comp after mine went bananas after some stupid site snuck a virus in...zone alarm didn't even catch it and I thought i caught it but then symptoms started showing a couple weeks later and then the next day the os wouldn't boot...since i had a better comp waiting to be finished in the other room...bla bla bla...upgrade! Wait...this is a forum for e-bikes...not comps. Got my 700Li working just amazingly! X-treme told me to disconnect this blue wire...i made myself this crappy caddy for my cooler for work and put it where the passenger backrest is..saw this other guy on here make his w/ metal from the shipping...wish i had the tools to do that...my friend clocked it at 21mph w/ his phone...why the hell does a phone have a speedometer on it anyways!? It takes me 10 minutes to drive to where I meet to carpool for work in the morning in my car. The 700Li took about 22 minutes to get to the same spot! And I'll go 60 where its 50 w/ the car to save time...I'm freakin' amazed w/ this scooter. I'm gonna cancel my car insurance and rely on this thing. I hate driving and its sooo much fun riding this thing around. I got a voltmeter for the battery since it seemed like a good idea from i read...now to figure out how to read the damn thing....enough rambling...glad to see that ppl cared enough to respond to my nonsense!
I have had my 700li for 15 months and ride it to work almost every day. They are awesome and I really like it. You mentioned installing a voltmeter - I installed a digital 2 wire self powered voltmeter in the dash, and it gives me a very accurate reading. 53 volts at full charge, and low voltage cut off is about 42.7. When it hits 46 volts under load I have about 5 miles left. I also installed a bicycle speedometer and I top out at about 19.5 mph. (6'2", 225) I also have a range of about 18 miles. I think it has dropped a little since I purchased it 15 months ago, but not considerably. I have had to replace the following items...most due to my own carelessness or lack of knowledge about the bike...pedals, pedal arms, trunk lid, hand throttle, seat. I have been stopped by the police twice. Both were for riding on the sidewalk because my other option was a 50mph street, but neither gave me a ticket. Lesson learned. Stay off the sidewalk.
I got a ticket maybe 2 weeks ago! I was at a 4-way intersection and i had like 5 cars behind me and there was nobody in the oncoming lane to the left. My turn was maybe 300 feet up and so i figure i scoot over to the oncoming lane real quick then i won't make traffic all nutty what w/ ppl having to go around me. Some cop sees me and pulls me over...LIGHTS ON AND EVERYTHING!! i had to stop myself from LOL'ING...yet i was mad that this was making me late for work. The guy actually asked me for registration! I had to explain it was an e-bike and pointed at the pedals...luckily i had a copy of the fed e-bike law printed out and I keep it in the bike under the seat. He gave me a li'l attitude and told me 'you're really pushing it with that thing'. f'in' funny. So...I got a 58 dollar ticket for 'failure to keep right'....and i thought i was trying to do a good thing by not holding up traffic. I canceled my car insurance and took my car off the road....and it only takes me 10 minutes longer to get to work! I ordered some rain gear off of ebay that some company was liquidating and i rode in the drizzle yesterday...so i know i can take it...man its sweet not having to be bound to the system or oil.
Like kids playing with realistic toy guns, folks not in-the-know may not see you as a bicycle, and, as you learned, it is helpful to behave as though you are riding what you appear to be riding.
The same lesson cost my wife $90.00.
Scoots are getting a HORRIBLE reputation, and I can see why. They're still fun though...

With the scooter style e-bikes, a move that may have gotten overlooked on a human powered bicycle or even an e-bike of traditional appearance will draw instant scrutiny. Your best bet is to follow the letter of the law to the utmost degree, until these vehicles are a lot more common. Breaking traffic laws in genneral is a way bad idea, but on an e-bike/scooter, its BEGGING for a ticket, or worse.
