Re: XB-600 "Shunt Mod" instructions

I have done the shunt mod on my XB-500, and it makes a great deal of difference. Rather than post my instructions here, I have posted them on my website. the address is:
http://www.bergerweb.net/xb500/
When you get there, click on the "More Power" link on the left side of the page.
Hope you find the information on my website useful. I'll be adding more pictures and information as time goes by.

Well, well Here's the problem did the shunt, bike works, gos, stops but power drain is insane. My commute is 4.6km each way and on the last .5 km the bike started pulsing jerking power cutting in and out eased off the throttle and same till I got to 30km.
any suggestions?will take out the shunt in the morning and just leave the 2 shunts ,maybe buy a spare controller.HELP!!!

You don't say whether it goes any better, or not. If you don't need the shunt mod for going up hills, then there is no need to put it in, since it will reduce your distance. I and others use the shunt mod to get better hill climbing, not for longer range.

Re: XB-600 "Shunt Mod" instructions

Yea O.K I had a problem, my battery wasn't charged.Took it out and charged the battery direct had no problem. It Gos a little quicker on take off ,can climb small grades without losing speed large grades are still a problem though. but a good improvement. Now the reason the battery died on me was I have a blue governor wire out the back of the controller. When hooked up the bike goes the legal 32km/h in canada. When unhooked the bike goes 38km/h.So if I unhook it with the battery hooked up to the bike for some reason it does not charge proper but if I take out the battery and turn the key to clear the capacitors and unhook the wire the bike charges fine.So thanks to every one next is to find out If I can remove a small capacitor from the board to get more top speed,I saw a blurb on the internet but no instructions or pics ,claims of 42km/h by doing this,hmm....
If any one has a guess I can find pics of this board to look at.
After that maby a 60vmod.Again thanks to all that helped.
Peace out.

Re: XB-600 "Shunt Mod" instructions

Hi all, maybe somebody can help me with a problem I am having with my XB-600. I would like to do the mod as shown above but need to fix a problem I am having. The problem is that when I start off from a start it is eratic. When I speed up it is not smooth as it seems to surge from time to time for no reason. It is noticable more when going up hills. Can anybody tell me what I should be checking? Does it sound like the controller? What would effect the power to the motor like that? any help would be appreciated. You can email me at outolunchcruisin [at] gmail.com. Thanks.

The first thing i would check is all the connections. If you have a loose connection somewhere in the motor or controller connections it could cause what you have described.

Good luck,

Check the connections on the tiny hall effect wires, I had the black one almost come loose. They are so small that the terminals break off of them.

Keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up.

Re: XB-600 "Shunt Mod" instructions

Hello,

I just purchased an XB-600 a few weeks ago. After ordering new batteries, I read your posting on the shunt mod and was most impressed.

I would like to perform the shunt mod on my XB-600 using your method, unfortunately I am unable to see the instructional pictures you had posted.

Would it be possible for you to e-mail, or repost the instructions for the XB-600 shunt mod. My E-mail is: eagle218 [at] hotmail.com

Thanks in advance,

Eagleye

Re: XB-600 "Shunt Mod" instructions

Hey Guys,

On Friday night after work I decided to take a long ride up some hilly areas in my community to really test out the scooter and the mods. About 4 miles into the ride and after 4 or 5 pretty steep hills at full throttle the bike gave out on me. Once I got it home I opened it up and found that the blade fuse and the holder had melted and I had lost power. Upon further investigation, it looked like the fuse might have been improperly set into the box with the blade sandwiched between one connector and the plastic casing. I hadn't opened it since getting the bike from the manufacturer so it probably came that way. You should check to make sure that this doesn't happen to you. I am sure I was drawing more amps then I should with the mod but I think the improper placement of the fuse had something to do with it.

I couldn't find the exact replacement part from X-Treme so I found a temporary fuse box and some new fuses (the fuses that come from the manu are really really cheap compared to the ones I got at Radio Shack.) I replaced the box and everything was working fine again. On Sunday night I decided to redo the same trip to see how it would go and the bike did it all without a hiccup (The whole 8 miles up and down hills). I will say that I stayed one notch back on the accelerator just in case but it only reduced my speed to about 16mph going up some pretty steep hills. I checke the condition of the fuse after the ride and it appeared unchanged.

I have to say after a few weeks of ownership that some of the parts are pretty low grade. The screws and bolts especially. The bolts that hold the seat have already stripped after only a few times of taking the seat off. I went to my local hardware store and when I showed them the screw I needed to replace they were amazed at the low quality of the original. I replaced all the screws and bolts I could easily see on the bike for about 8 bucks. It was well worth the time and money for me to not have to worry about stripping screws all the time.

Cheers

Hello to all. I am new to this site and also new to the GIO e-bike. Just bought one and found it very slow on the hills. ( It is uphill to my house from all directions ). The floor mat has HB5 on it and the owners manual says it is PB710. It is the 500watt model. My question is---will your (shunt) mods work on this bike ? I read that you are not havein any problems so I thought you would be the one to ask, but all info would be appreciated. I just want more power to climb the hills, I found the speed on the level ground was acceptable ( for now ) Roger

Re: XB-600 "Shunt Mod" instructions

Well, I guess I'm gonna bite the bullet and give this a try.
I'll buy another controller (for the Shunt Mod), I'll buy a fifth battery (for the 60v) boost and wire it up. Also, get some extra fuses.
I've read over this (and other mod threads), sometimes the information is conflicting and it seems some folks have good or bad luck.
At this point, I'm only hoping for a top speed of 25 MPH, if I get more I'll be happy, but I'll settle for 25 on flat ground.

Likewise, I'll have to get another charger, too... or i'll be waiting all day to charge all 5 batteries.
I'd like to wire it into the plug line and only have ONE charger, not two (as per the original post).
Also, I might look for somewhere else to store the battery because I also like the seat storage.

Re: XB-600 "Shunt Mod" instructions

Ebiker, if you add another battery and do the shunt mod, you will get 28-30mph out of this scooter. I didn't notice any adverse effects of doing these mods either. You can get a 60v charger from xtremescooters fairly cheap for easy charging. If you decide later to go over 60v other modifications will need to be done. Examples in this thread: 72v 35mph xb-600

Keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up.

Re: XB-600 "Shunt Mod" instructions

I'm ordering the additional battery today. Judging by all the threads on this forum and from some Google searches it seems that X-treme scooters still has the best price for batteries and controllers. Especially since the shipping is included. I'm also wondering if my entire battery pack needs to be changed. It's getting old in the tooth, and the Previous Owner said this year (2011) would be when they were going to change the batteries. Perhaps I'll conduct more tests. I need a new voltage meter because the one I have now seems messed up, it only reads "1" no matter what I select or what I attempt to read. It was only a couple of bucks off eBay, so I should expect to get what I paid for.

Speaking of eBay... A MONTH ago I ordered a wireless speedometer and I was going to test mount it on the rear wheel and frame...
But I never got it.
