2 kW motor for electric snowboard winch?

i'm trying to find a 2000 watt motor (48V) that i can use for an electric snowboard winch. I have already made a really nice electric wakeboarding winch (for an explanation of what these winches are check out the gas powered versions... www.neverride.com or www.ridiculouswinches.com) but it is too heavy duty for snowboarding. I can get a 1000 watt motor from monsterscooterparts.com or tncscooters.com - but it is a little light. i don't want the weight or the expense of a big etek replacement (4000 - 8000 watt motors). It seems like there is a big gap between 1000 to 4000 watt motors. I can't find anything that would be 1500 watt to 2500 watt for a decent price. Does anyone know where to look?

Re: 2 kW motor for electric snowboard winch?(Too SMALL!)

After viewing your referenced sites, it is apparent that the power required of these winches exceeds 6 horsepower, because the lowest powered unit I saw was 6.6 horsepower. A 2000 watt winch would be likely to give SLOW pull speed,(a 10 mph tow is not much fun) and disapointing service in such an application (or burn out early, due to overload). The ETEK type motors, with a 400 amp controller, on 72 volts, might be useful and fun, but would be somewhat expensive with good batteries. Striving for a system that can repeatedly and reliably produce at least 12 horsepower for qne minute seems advisable, considering the intended use. Small motors pull small loads fast, and big loads slowly! If your board and load are only 75 pounds or less, (a small kid?) a 2000 watt motor might be ok, but most of us humans (adults)weigh more! 2KW, at 100% efficiency, gives LESS than 3 horsepower! Since motors and controllers are NOT 100% efficient, around 10KW or better of power for one minute, should be figured as a starting point, battery wise.-Bob Curry

Re: 2 kW motor for electric snowboard winch?(Too SMALL!)

Bob,
my fault, i didn't explain myself well enough. I agree, that 2 kW is too small to make a wakeboarding winch. I have actually successfully built a wakeboarding winch with a Mars 0708 motor. that is a 6hp continuous, 15 peak hp motor - and it work great! What I am trying to do now is build a similar device for snowboarding. i'd like to make it much lighter - and i think i can because the amount of drag to pull someone on a snowboard is significantly less than that required to pull someone out of the water on a wakeboard and to pull them on plane above the water on a wakeboard. my estimates, from a lot of wakeboarding and snowboarding, is that it takes 1/4 or less of the force to pull someone on a snowboard compared to a wakeboard. but, trying to calculate this on a spreadsheet (which seemed to work well when i built the wakeboarding winch), a 1000 watt motor will just barely meet my specs, but I'd like something a little larger to leave a little margin of error and room for say pulling someone through deep wet snow. but! no one seems to make a 2000 watt motor, except for a variety of hub motors, which won't really work for me...
any ideas?

I'm having the same problem. Did you find a 2kW motor in the end?
