Parts for the EVT 4000e Scooter -brushes

To 4000e Owners & Dealers,

I just purchased a 4000e scooter and love it. It has a 1500w brush motor. I have found several good information sources on how to maintain the scooter. However, parts seem to be a problem. Several sell the scooter but not the parts.

I have checked EVT dealers and third party ev parts websites about obtaining replacement brushes for the 1500w brush motor. However, no one I talked to seems to sell the parts such as replacement brushes.

Does anyone know who sells replacement motor brushes and otherwise has a good selection of parts for the EVT 4000e scooter?

It is a good scooter and I do not want to wait until it breaks to try and find parts.

Thanks

I don´t think you have to worry about new brushes for some time, I have a customer who´s been driving more than 30.000 miles with his EVT4000e before the brushes started to show signs of wear...

Best regards

Re: Parts for the EVT 4000e Scooter -brushes

Johnny,

I clean the brush motor on my 4000e once a year.

Do you know how to tell when brushes of 4000e are start to go bad? What are the signs?

I am not sure how to tell.

Thanks

Hi Rob,

the signs are less power, slowness and then bucking.

Hi, what company did you order brushes from, and what did they cost?

Re: Parts for the EVT 4000e Scooter -brushes

Hello,

I am also trying to purchase an 8-set carbon brushes for my EVT-4000e scooter (2003 make). This is very useful information, I will contact Sound Speed Scooters.

I have opened and cleaned the motor of this scooter twice, using the gear-puller technique (thanks to Reikiman for his blog regarding this!).

Could any of you kindly share with me how to change the *brushes* of the opened motor? I don't find any links and there is no local support for these scooters in Melbourne, Florida. I'm having to DIY this one now with a friend's help....

Moderators, you might want to please move this to a new thread if you find it off-topic....

Thanks a lot!

Regards,

Venky

I am still trying to figure that out. However, Soundspeed Scooters says it it easy. The brushes each have an electrical wire connected to them. Just only replace one at a time so you do not get confused where they go. Still waiting on order from Soundspeed. Been several weeks. Hope I do not have to look for another seller.

Re: Parts for the EVT 4000e Scooter -brushes

Hi Rob,

Thanks for your e-mail. I have meanwhile written to another supplier who had provided me brake pads last year. (I had located this vendor on e-bay. If you query on evt-4000e in the search box, you will find one that sells brake pads.)

The supplier replied saying (s)he will take a look tomorrow at the price of an 8-piece brush-set. It seems (s)he is also looking into having these custom-made to save cost. I should hear soon.

What are the dimensions of each carbon brush (L x W x H)? How long is the wire that emanates from each brush? I can find that out myself but would have to reopen the motor. If you happen to have the info already, it will be great if you can let me know!

With warm regards,

Venky

Re: Parts for the EVT 4000e Scooter -brushes

I have my motor open. Been trying to get brushes. However, mine is a 2007 model and brushes are warn. Is that going to help you? I have read that my brushes are different from your earlier model. Let me know if a can still help.

I will look for your other supplier on bay. Mine has stopped communicating. shame.

Re: Parts for the EVT 4000e Scooter -brushes

Have found local alternator shop to help me. Have to send sample to GA and have them cut. Original brush seller did not work out. the local alternator helped me remove one the brushes. Not too hard. Push in and out with some pressure. However, must be careful to remember where each one goes and where wire connects. If you do not pay attention and label, you can get into trouble.

Noticed that inner set of brushes (2007 model) wearing faster than outer set. Told that place where brush is making contact is rough and wearing brushes. However, may just have to live with that. Cannot easily smooth it out without possible damage. Anyone have suggestions?

Wish there was a good parts supplier or repair shop for this bike. Surprising.

Re: Parts for the EVT 4000e Scooter -brushes

Hi Rob,

Thanks for this information and also, for responding so promptly.

I haven't received any reply from the e-Bay person over these last few days. Meanwhile I have located an electrical store who can help me remove the carbon brushes from the motor. I have yet to speak with them. I will also ask them a local custom-builder for the brushes. One alternative is for me to call EVT at Taiwan and ask about this.

Are you ensuring that the brushes are of the "heavy-duty" kind and quality sought for an EV? I think the quality differs from the ones for applications such as drilling machines or vacuum cleaners. How are you managing this? Is the contact at GA able to help order the correct brush material (Carbon-based)?

Yes, there is scant support for these scooters....

Thank you,

Venky

Re: Parts for the EVT 4000e Scooter -brushes

Venky,

I wish I had all the answers. Like you, I feel that I am flying in the dark at litte. I took your suggestion and also had e-mailed the ebay person and sent him photos. However, he has not responded. In the meantime, Soundpeed finally responded and mailed me brushes (2007 version). If they are correct, I may order another set. Afterwards, I will see if the local alternator store can help me replicate them for future needs. You may want to check with Soundpeed to see if they have your earlier version. If that does not work, I would try shops that rebuild alternators. There seems to be some similarity. Sadly, Soundpeed does sell 4000e hub motors (rebuilt, $500.00). If you get stuck, that may be your last and only option.

I hope the brushes are heavy duty enough. I have told the people that it is for a hub motor 48V 1500Kw. Suprisingly, most I have contacted are used to working with even higher voltage, etc. I will keep my fingers crossed. Eventually, I will look into a brushless motor. However, that is more complicated project for another day.

One Additional comment. I have sent the GA people a sample. They seem to be familair working with the carbon material. Seems to be difference with voltages. Must make sure 48V.

Re: Parts for the EVT 4000e Scooter -brushes

Rob,

Thanks a lot for providing me the information! I'm sorry the e-Bay person did not respond, he has similarly not written back to me at all! Sound Speed Scooters seems to be a good option and I will talk to them tonight.... Electric Motorsport told me they can send me a set for about $100 but after that Todd has been unavailable on the days / times I've tried calling there.

Thanks again,

Venky
