Which gears do you use?

We have three recumbent. bikes set up with PL-350 Bionx units. I usually set up with freewheels having 11-tooth high gear (Epoch/DNP), and chainrings of 26/42/52 (26" rear wheel). For low gears on the freewheel, they are either 32 or 34 teeth. This allows us to pedal at speeds from 2-3 mph up to 25mph comfortably. I like to ride in assist setting 1 most of the time, and I use the 26 tooth chainring when climbing hills. We have them here in NH too! This seems to give me more torque to the rear wheel. My logic when setting up gearing on an ebike is to allow me to pedal at top speed comfortably, but to also have really low gears available in the event of motor/battery/wiring failure, when I might have to pedal home on my own with a heavy bike! Our bikes range from 7-speed to 9-speed rear clusters. Doesn't matter a lot. I find that the upper and lower gears are the most important with even gear changes in between. I picked up some 7-speed components inexpensively recently, because the manufacturers seem to have everyone convinced they need the latest and greatest, and the retro stuff is inexpensive.
