The largest commercial photovoltaic system in the United States?

The largest commercial photovoltaic system in the United States?

June 28, 2007 This aerial image of Google’s corporate headquarters in Mountain View turned up in a press release this morning, pointing out that the 1.6 MW Google Solar "Campus" is now the largest commercial photo voltaic system in the United States. Take a look at the image in higher res and see if you had the same reaction we did. Google doesn’t smelt aluminum, cast large metal objects or refine petroleum – it’s activities are confined to a bunch of people quietly working away at computers. Recognizing that Planet Earth is drowning in its own excrement no longer needs a PhD or an election and this is the largest photo voltaic system in the whole U.S.A.? It’s just not that big!

BTW, if you look very hard we may see our Webmaster working on one of his many EV's which include; EVT 4000e (2002), Bicycles: Charger bicycle, Trek mountain bike w/ Wilderness Energy hub motor, Xtracycle frame, Lectra motorcycle, Home-built three-wheel motorcycle or the Vego 600sx.

Re: The largest commercial photovoltaic system in the United Sta

Hmm... Okay, this makes me feel better about their solar power system. They mounted it on the roof of their buildings. They have a parking lot on Charleston (just off the left side of this picture) which I had seen, and a couple weeks ago took some pictures (which I intend to post "soon"). The one I'd found is rather small and no way in heck does it provide 1.6 MW. And that one has trees and a building on its south border, so I expect it might get some shadow. But this picture clearly shows that there's a very large installation on the rooftops. You can't see those panels from the street (I've driven through their neighborhood a few times looking).

BTW, there's an interesting thing you can do using Google Maps/Earth and browse any industrial or office park area. Make a mental estimate of the percentage of land area covered by rooftops or parking lots. For the most part every square foot of rooftop or parking lot could be solar panels. There's a few exceptions such as areas which have big trucks driving through, but those would just require mounting the panels on taller poles. Solar panels would provide not just power but shade and shelter from rain.

Anyway.. as for where I live relative to that picture. You go a couple blocks north, and then 1 mile west. You missed a couple vehicles, BTW..

You have more? I have this disease of collecting projects to do and then never finishing them. One you missed is a motorcycle where I'm following the El Chopper ET plans, and that bike is halfway through its reconstruction sitting in the garage and I don't know if I'll ever get to it. The other one you missed is a Honda Elite scooter I got as a frame, and started conversion but didn't finish. The good news is that last night I managed to get a controller properly wired to the Lectra and the wheels spin, so now I can pretty soon have it as a properly registered and licensed and insured electric motorcycle and hopefully stop using my gas motorcycle.

Oh, and I have a Roomba. Don't laugh, if you think about it they're EV's ...

` ;)
I knew you were in need of a 12 step program, but not to that extent. Glad to see Lectra is progressing, will there be a Lectra Blog from you or Andrew?
Well technically the I guess we can count the Roomba.

The Roomba is a robotic vacuum cleaner made and sold by iRobot. It is marketed as a "Robotic Floorvac". The Roomba was first released in 2002 with updates and new models released in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. As of May 2006, over 2 million units have been sold.

We need to start calling you "Webmaster Gadget" :)

Peace Out,
Gman

"Largest Commercial"? Does that me the most solar panels per individual business?

As for largest solar 'farm' that I've ever seen, point your Google Earth programs here: 34.865943°,-116.825278°
