xm-5000 brake lights

Aloha,

Can anyone suggest what part might have failed that has caused my brake lights to not come on? I know it's not the bulbs, but beyond checking for that, I'm clueless. The guy at the safety inspection station checked to see if the light sockets were getting any signal when the brake lever was depressed and he said it wasn't.

Respectfully,

Jeff

Look at your schematic and see if there is a DC-DC converter supplying lighting, horn, etc. Then you can verify the existence of 12V in general on the scoot. I'm on my third DC-DC converter, but the stock ones still seem to be the best balance of cost and capacity.

Thank you Mark. I'm afraid I don't have a schematic, but would the fact that everthing else is working eliminate the DC-DC not working?

Hi there,

My DC-DC converter is just below the flap between your legs that needs to be opened with the bike key. Inside there, there is a normal car style 10A fuse.

If your headlights, horn, and turn signals work, (and if your headlights are on a 12V circuit), then yes indeed, the DC-DC is probably all right, and the fault is somewhere else, probably in the connectors.

You can look at any other scooter wiring diagram to get a general idea of how the brake lights are operated.

Re: xm-5000 brake lights

There are probably at least one or more connections between the dc=dc converter and the tail light socket. Bypass em if they seem OK to go directly to the brake light socket. You may have to remove an amazing amount of plastic to see the entire wire harness. The socket could also have failed. So test at every connection-at some point you'll find a failure.

Re: xm-5000 brake lights

Jeff,

The schematic is on the back page of the Owner's Manual you received with the XM-5000Li. As for the rear lights not working and everything else working, try to disconnect the fuse for the lights under the speedo. Then check the connection in the rear. Are all the lights in the rear not working? Like the turn signals. I wish you luck. Type in Kman Scooters online and Chris there can be a big help. He is here in Milwaukee and will do his best to help you.

yount

Thank you Yount! I'll give it my best shot. Thank you also for the contact info. I have a feeling I'll be contacting him. I'm not very handy.

Re: xm-5000 brake lights

I had a similar problem at inspection this year (no tail or brake lights) and it turned out the headlight switch was controlling only those lights - and was in the full Off position. I had to have some rewiring done on the scooter so the situation may be unique to mine, but check the light switch anyway.
