EVT400e range and Anderson Power Products..

Hi, my EVT400e has a problem with range, I took out the batteries and checked them
and they seem fine, the voltage is between 13.07 and 13.11 Volts, and the scooter
has only run 100 miles over the last three years.

It runs fine, but the led energy meter dips as soon as I push it a bit, and the
controller seems to shut the bike down too early.

I checked the connection to the battery poles, and they are fine, but I don't like
the way the anderson connectors look. The poles pieces in them seem a bit curved,
and I wonder how they the can sustain high currents without a substantial drop in
voltage.

After all, there is no less than eight of these contact points in series with the
battery..

I think I am going get rid of them and crimp on something and screw the battery
leads togetrher instead.

What do you think?

I agree it's odd to have the batteries hooked through so many anderson's -- on the other hand the ones they're using are 300A rated, so I'm not sure what the problem would be. And there is a huge convenience when you remove the batteries to be able to disconnect them at the andersons so easily.

As for the performance ... The real test for a battery is the voltage under load, not the at-rest voltage. e.g. a "Battery Load Tester" is a great idea, and relatively inexpensive. It's basically a big heating element, a volt meter, and a couple LARGE battery clamps. You connect the clams over the battery, connecting the heating element as a load, showing you voltage under load.

Aren't you the one with the canadian controller ?
Just a few thoughts :
The canadian controller makes it run faster, so I guess it's normal that the range drops. Since more current is drawn to make the scooter run faster, I believe it's possible that the led meter dips earlier.
Since the scooter has only run 100 miles in the last three years, is it possible that the batteries have lost power just by standing still ? Maybe you can try to revive the batteries with a desulfator ?
The Anderson connectors are widely used in industrial applications, so I believe that they have proven ruggedness and/or stability in connections. But as long as you get your 48 V to the right connections, I guess it will work out fine.

Hi Kris :)

The unrestricted Canadian controller will obviously drain the batteries earlier if I
drive fast.

As for the Anderson connectors, they are fine. I measured them with a good instrument,
and they are 0 Ohms.. They claim 200 uOhms, and I believe them, so no problem there.

I bought a desulfator off ebay, and took out the batteries and treated them for 2 days
each, but I haven't checked the range yet, but I will in a few days, as I'm going to
sell it.

I bought a PDT Sprint 5000 in May, so I use that now. Its fast, and has a way better
range than the EVT.

Did you ever get a chance to find out what's the difference between the canadian & the European controller ? I mean if it 's something like changing a resistor, I don't have to order a 400$ controller in Canada ....
Found a site on the PDT sprint 5000. I think it's not comparable with the 4000e, it's already a real motorcycle. Very nice machine though ...

There is a long thread elsewhere about the unrestricted controller. The differences between the controllers they sell is probably due to software.

The EU controller limits pwm ratio to 80%, the unrestricted has no such limit, besides overload limitation due to high temp, high current drain or low battery.
