Ive decided to build another electric bike, but im having trouble sourcing parts. Mainly batteries and motors. Ive been looking at Crystalyte's solutions, but I was wondering if anyone else knew of a better place to shop? The bike im building isnt supposed to be for transportation, but for fun, like a dirtbike, so it needs speed, not so much torque. Ive been looking at LiFePo4 batteries to power the thing, and a standard mountain bike as a host to all the parts. While I do have access to a metalshop to modify and build, id rather not use it if i dont have to. I was looking at motors in excess of 750 watts, something a motorized scooter would use, but they all have motorcycle type dimensions and tires, I need something that'll fit on a standard set of forks, although I could modify them to fit a slightly wider motor. Ive yet to decide on brushed/brushless though, buy any suggestions are very welcome.

When you write "like a dirt bike" do you mean "use as a dirt bike"? Because if you do, you're taking the wrong approach. You need torque for dirt bikes more than speed, and unless your mountain bike is built like a tank it isn't going to hold up well with all the extra weight of a drive and battery system. If you want an electric dirt bike, start with a smaller gas dirt bike with a full-sized frame and sturdy suspension, and remove the engine/transmission unit (unless you want to use the transmission) and gas tank. Then you will have 2/3 of what you need, already built...

Got it. So you want to pedal along and get a lot of speed, rather than have lots of torque but a low top speed?
No, but I think I failed to explain properly, it just needs to go fast on flat pavement, but it'll never see use offroad. very little pedaling involved, mostly a joyride machine.
To sum up, this builder is looking for a 'hotrod' electric bike, one that will NEVER meet HR 727 limits, but as a private property toy will be a screamer, my interpretation anyhow.

I bought my 48V1000W kit with 20AH lifepo4 battery from daoji666 on ebay. I bought a $225 full suspension front disc brake bike and paid $825 total for the kit. I put the controller and battery pack in a plastic toolbox and strapped it to the crossbar between the seat and handlebars. It took about an hour. It climbs a 14% grade @ 26mph--the bike weighs about 75lbs. It's range is 60-70 miles at 25 mph on reasonably flat ground. The governed top speed is about 30mph. I go offroading all the time. What more can you ask for?
